School Chefs Derby (Pumacode)

Location: Derby, Derbyshire and surrounding areas

Establishments: Schools & Nurseries

Contract type: Temporary – some contracts may lead to permanent after successful period.

Hourly rate/Salary: £16p/h – £17p/h

Can you whip up a storm in the kitchen and convince kids to eat their veggies? Then we want to hear from you!

Responsibilities
  • Cook meals that make kids say ‘Mmm!’ not ‘Eww!’
  • Keep the kitchen running like clockwork.
  • Ensure allergies, safety, and hygiene are always top‑notch.
  • Bring creativity, energy, and a splash of fun to the menu.
  • Prepare fresh nutritious food ensuring children of all ages have a hot meal daily.
  • Cover holiday, sickness and increased business demand across several contract catering environments.

Requirements
  • Chef/cooking experience (school, café, care home, pub – all welcome).
  • A love of food and feeding people.
  • Organisation and teamwork skills.
  • Positive attitude.
  • Enhanced DBS covering child workforce valid within last 12 months.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of stock management and ordering (role dependent).
  • Enjoy working with different people and in varied environments.
  • Ability to manage teams and produce own weekly menus.
  • Experience with fresh food in a contract catering environment.
  • Flexibility and ability to manage your own diary.
  • Own chef whites and knives.
  • At least 2 years background working as a cook or chef manager at cook level or above.
Working Hours

Part‑time – suitable for chefs looking to pick extra hours.

Full‑time – suitable for chefs looking for full‑time work with flexible options.

Work mainly Monday‑Friday from 7/8 am to 3/4 pm, weekends off (work on weekends possible to build hours).

Commute

Locations across Derby & Nottingham. If you have a car and are flexible with locations, great. If limited to public transport, we will only send you to locations with links and provide the necessary information.
