Derby Public Schools is seeking a dynamic and student-centered Director of Alternative Learning to provide professional leadership in organizing, administering, supervising, and evaluating alternative K12 programming. This position supports the implementation of social-emotional instruction, coordinates foster care and McKinney-Vento services, and ensures all students have access to innovative pathways that promote college and career readiness.
The Director of Alternative Learning will lead the district's alternative education programs and facilitate learning opportunities to meet the needs of all students.

Job Description
Purpose:
The Director of Alternative Learning at Derby Public Schools provides professional leadership in organizing, administering, supervising and evaluating alternative K-12 programing, supporting the implementation of social-emotional instruction, and coordinating the all foster care and homeless student needs. To accomplish these tasks, the Director of Alternative Learning will lead the alternative education program and facilitate learning opportunities to meet the needs of all students.

Qualifications:
1. Masters degree from an accredited college/university.
2. Three years certified teaching experience. Leadership experience preferred.
3. Current Kansas teaching license, with one of the following endorsements:
District Leadership, District School Administrator, or Building Leadership.
4. Experience working with gifted, at-risk, and special needs populations strongly preferred.
Essential Functions:
1. Knowledge, Skill and Abilities
a. Provide professional leadership in organizing, administering, supervising and evaluating all alternative education programming.
b. Extensive knowledge of Social Emotional Standards, assessments, and strategies.
c. Background working collaboratively to facilitate learning for students in Foster Care or who would qualify for McKinney-Vento support.
d. Ensure that all education programs and activities are in compliance with federal, state and district guidelines.
e. Develop, obtain and monitor a range of acceleration, career and technical education, online and drop-in programs to meet the needs of all students.
f. Ensure that all students are receiving adequate services and skills training to be considered "college and career ready."
g. Work effectively with parent and community organizations.
h. Exercise good judgement and decision making.
i. Responsible for building level special education administration.
j. React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
k. Support the value of education.
l. Support the philosophy and mission of Derby Public Schools.
m. Comply with all district policies, rules and regulations.

Physical Requirements /
Environmental Conditions:
a. Requires the ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods.
b. Occasionally requires the ability to manually move, lift, carry, pull or push objects or materials up to 25 lbs.
c. Occasionally requires the ability to stoop, bend and reach.
d. Requires the ability to travel.
e. Must be able to work indoors and outdoors year-round.
f. Must be able to work in noisy and crowded environments
g. Requires long and irregular hours.
h. Must be able to handle stress.
i. Requires emotional/physical endurance.
j. Requires regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.
General Responsibilities:
1. Establish effective working relationships and communicate effectively with all school staff, members of the community, and community support agencies.
2. Promotes the success of all students in the alternative education programs by facilitating the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of alternative learning that is shared and supported by the community.
3. Responsible for oversight of the district Foster Care Student support services across all schools.
