Overview
The Hourly Lifeguard position is responsible for ensuring the safety of guests, surveillance of the pool facility and surrounding areas, enforcement of policies, rules, and regulations, and governing the conduct of guests using a municipal swimming pool. This position requires working evenings, weekends, and holidays, and requires the ability to travel to work at all City facility pools as needed. This position requires a commitment of a minimum of 12 hours per week.
Recreation staff have the primary responsibility of ensuring the safety of program participants. This position is classified as safety-sensitive and may be subject to random drug testing and/or heightened supervision per the personnel policies and rules.
The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each candidate.

GENERAL COMPETENCIES
Job Specific – Every employee in this position must be able to:
- Demonstrate preventative lifeguarding and current lifeguard techniques, standards, and procedures related to rescue of a drowning swimmer or any user in distress in or around the swimming pool
- Act quickly and calmly in emergency situations by making proper judgments as to the correct course of action
- Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning
- Pass the City of Westminster’s swim and lifeguard skills test
- Demonstrate first aid procedures common in swimming pool operations
- Demonstrate CPR and rescue breathing skills within certification standards, and the use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
- Work courteously with the public and support the City of Westminster guest service philosophy and the SPIRIT values

Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks
- Monitor activities in swimming pool areas to prevent drownings, injuries, or accidents
- Respond to emergencies
- Provide quality swim lesson instruction
- Participate in maintenance and cleaning duties including pool, locker rooms, deck, and surrounding facilities
- Enforce pool rules while following department guest-host philosophy
- Participate in and attend monthly in-service trainings
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Instruct swimming classes of various age groups and ability levels
- Maintain records of activity levels and usage
- Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City's discretion
Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications
Required
:
- Must be at least 15 years of age
- Ability to pass Star Guard Elite Lifeguard Training, including first aid and CPR/AED training within 30 days of hire
- Must pass a required swim test during the interview process
- Must be able to work a minimum of 12 hours per week
