The Division of Youth Services (DYS) provides a continuum of residential and non‑residential services that encompass juvenile detention, assessment, commitment and parole. DYS is statutorily mandated to provide care and supervision for youth committed by the District Court to the custody of the Colorado Department of Human Services. The Division operates ten secure facilities serving youth aged 10 to 21, and administers juvenile parole services statewide.
JobAssignment
Manage the food services program in a juvenile correctional facility, oversee the youth food service work program, supervise staff and youth, provide quality meals, and ensure compliance with regulations, policies, and standards.
Responsibilities Supervise YouthSupervise youth participating in the food services work program and youth offenders. Assign and evaluate work, handle informal grievances, initiate corrective and disciplinary actions, and assist in selections and removals. Provide direct care, safety, security, and supervision of adjudicated and/or pre‑adjudicated youth in a locked setting, enforce security rules, orient youth to agency rules, intervene early in volatile situations, provide crisis intervention, monitor movement, escort to activities, conduct searches, identify and seize contraband, and support behavioral management plans.
MealPreparation and Service
Prepare food ensuring correct temperatures and presentation. Follow menus and recipes in compliance with National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, and DYS policies. Make appropriate substitutions, portion foods correctly, enter data, and oversee youth in prep, cooking, and cleaning. Delegate tasks and ensure food is served in proper quantities.
Safety and SecurityAnticipate safety and security concerns, report problems, enforce safety policies, ensure proper equipment use, maintain lock procedures, handle equipment failure notifications, store chemicals safely, train youth on fire prevention, and uphold ADA and PREA policies.
SanitationEnsure sanitation procedures are followed, record compliance, keep kitchen and storage areas clean, control times and temperatures, and meet health regulations.
Inventory ControlAssist in physical inventory counts, requisition supplies, inspect deliveries, reject inadequate items, store supplies using FIFO, submit requisitions, and assist with order deliveries.
Training and MeetingsAttend and complete all assigned training, maintain certifications, and participate in required DYS training programs.
Educate YouthFacilitate culinary program curriculum, instruct youth, administer exams, grade performance, maintain competency checklists, and support related events.
Other Duties as AssignedPerform additional duties and special projects as required.
Education and ExperienceHigh school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) AND at least four (4) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position. Additional appropriate education may substitute for required experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
Preferred Qualifications- Two years of documented supervisory staff oversight, including performance reviews, training, development, or other supervisory accomplishments.
- Full background check (including name, fingerprint, court, Medicare fraud, reference, license verification, drug screen, PREA, Trails, CAPS). Must be at least 21 years old.
- State of Colorado residency required; residency within Colorado throughout employment.
- Valid, non‑restricted Colorado Driver’s License or eligible U.S. Driver’s License; out‑of‑state license holders must obtain a Colorado license within 30 days of start date.
- Shift work: may be required to work breakfast, lunch, or dinner shifts.
