The Division of Youth Services (DYS) is dedicated to protecting, restoring and improving public safety through a continuum of care, supervision, accountability to victims and communities, and positive youth development. This is a direct care/essential role providing direct supervision of youth in DYS State Operated Secure Facilities. Responsibilities include Safety/Security, Youth Center Programming, Documentation/Recording and Reporting, Training, and Organizational Accountability. Overtime may be required on a rotating basis.
Responsibilities- Safety/Security: Provide direct care, safety, security, and supervision of adjudicated/pre-adjudicated youth; monitor and enforce behavioral management plans; supervise activities; crisis intervention; de-escalation; emergency use of physical restraint if needed; debrief incidents; conduct searches.
- Youth Center Programming: Implement and follow the Youth Center’s behavioral management program; teach, coach, and redirect youth; support DYS initiatives related to youth programming and crisis intervention.
- Documentation/Recording and Reporting: Document observations and activities in logs and databases; record youth group activities.
- Organizational Accountability: Uphold values of nonviolence, open communication, social responsibility, growth, trauma-responsive environment, and compliance with CDHS/DYS policies; adhere to Code of Conduct and standards.
- Training: Complete DYS Pre-Service training, Youth Center training and orientation; complete online trainings; learn problem-solving, relationship-building with youth, trauma-informed approaches, and behavioral health concepts.
- Other Duties: As assigned.
- High school diploma or GED
- Note:
These positions are not sedentary; duties may require standing, climbing stairs, and physical intervention with assaultive youth
- College education in behavioral health or juvenile justice
- Experience with adjudicated/detained youth in secure facilities or behavioral health settings
- Experience facilitating psycho educational groups; trauma-informed experience
- Experience in youth leadership roles, mentoring or coaching
- Experience using verbal de-escalation and motivational techniques
- Relevant state service experience
- Conflict management
- Strong work ethic, integrity and dependability
- Sound judgment and decision-making
- Self-control and ability to manage stress
- Clear verbal communication and respectful dialogue
- Ability to identify changes, hazards or security issues and communicate them
- Ability to document events clearly in writing
Shifts may include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays; shifts vary and may be 8, 10, or 12 hours. Overtime may be required. Some positions require reporting during inclement weather.
Conditions Of Employment- Background checks, driver’s license, and other pre-employment screenings
- Must be at least 21 years old with no felony convictions or domestic violence history
- Travel may be required for training or transporting youth
- Successful completion of pre-service training and ongoing mandatory training
- Vaccinations as required
- Disclosure requirements for previous state employment disciplinary actions
- The Diana Screen is administered to applicants for positions of trust with youth
