Job SummaryReporting directly to the Associate Director of Operations, this apprenticeship position focuses on maintenance and repair of campus utility systems, mechanical and HVAC equipment, plumbing, electrical components, and other building systems. The role supports HVAC preventative maintenance contractor activities and coordinates with maintenance staff. Upon successful completion of the four‑year apprenticeship program, the applicant will progress to a Journeyman Maintenance Mechanic.
MajorDuties and Responsibilities Facilities Maintenance & Work Order Response
- Receive, interpret, and complete work orders and maintenance requests as directed by supervisors.
- Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on campus building systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations.
- Troubleshoot issues and conduct corrective and prescriptive maintenance on building utilities and mechanical systems.
- Assign maintenance duties to contractors and monitor progress to assure work completion.
- Participate in on‑job training and technical coursework to build knowledge of building systems and facilities maintenance.
- Progress from entry‑level technical skills toward journeyman‑level proficiency as part of the apprenticeship program.
- Inspect, maintain, and repair mechanical and HVAC equipment including furnaces, fan coil units, air handling units, rooftop units, evaporative coolers, heat radiators, exhaust fans, pumps, motors, and related components.
- Maintain and troubleshoot pneumatic, manual, and DDC control valves and other equipment used with HVAC and mechanical systems.
- Perform routine equipment servicing including filter replacement, belt adjustments and replacements, bearing and motor maintenance, lubrication of moving parts, coil cleaning, pump alignment, and air compressor maintenance.
- Inspect system performance by checking amperage, voltage, electrical connections, belt sheaves, drain lines, diffusers, and supply ducts.
- Maintain and repair plumbing systems including faucets, sinks, garbage disposals, toilets, and building water, sewer, storm, and drain lines.
- Inspect and maintain electrical components related to mechanical systems, including relays, switches, motors, and supporting equipment.
Work may require being outdoors in all weather conditions and temperatures. Reliable availability is required for on‑call responsibilities and campus snow removal operations when needed.
Required Qualifications- High School graduate or GED equivalent.
- Valid Colorado Driver's License with a clean driving record that meets university insurer guidelines.
- (2) years of experience in building, grounds, or related maintenance/construction trades.
- (1) year of experience working directly with customers, providing service and information on maintenance problems.
- Ability to interpret written and verbal information and clearly convey technical information.
- Ability to read and interpret HVAC equipment manuals and technical instructions.
- Ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to work safely at heights.
- Ability to lift/carry 50 lbs. and push/pull 75 lbs.
- Ability to bend, kneel, stoop, twist, and climb; full range of body movement is essential.
- Ability to travel easily between buildings/campuses.
- Classes or vocational training in building/HVAC trades or apprentice training program in the utilities area.
- Experience in mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, or pipe fitting trades or maintenance.
