The Mobile Diesel Technician II is responsible for performing licensed DOT inspections, preventive maintenance inspections, light and follow‑up repairs, light mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic diagnostics, and other duties as assigned. The Technician II can perform more advanced diagnostics and repairs under the supervision of a Sr Mobile Diesel Technician or higher. Ongoing learning of advanced mechanical skills and diagnostic techniques is expected.
A successful Technician II complies with all company policies and achieves high performance metrics.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles in a mobile/field environment.
- Conduct minor adjustments and repairs on truck equipment including electrical/brake/cooling systems, starters/alternators, fan clutches, engine electronics, diesel steering systems, engines (gas and diesel), transmissions (manual and automatic), clutches, and differentials.
- Diagnose, adjust, and repair various truck equipment using handheld computers, pressure gauges, and other test instruments.
- Road‑test vehicles to confirm proper operation and identify malfunctions.
- Identify problems, determine their accuracy and relevance, and generate alternative solutions using sound judgment.
- Manage parts inventory and perform periodic reconciliations on the company‑issued service truck.
- Operate and inspect the service vehicle, including safety checks and pre/post‑trip inspections.
- Communicate effectively with clients and customers to assess needs, provide information, resolve issues, and satisfy expectations.
- Prioritize concurrent tasks and allocate time effectively.
- Use hand tools, precision instruments, diesel tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
- Document work, upload pictures, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders (RO) via the proprietary TRAIT application on an iOS device.
- Complete DOT forms and other documentation in a timely manner.
- Work independently and manage daily schedule.
- Maintain high productivity and meet standard repair times.
- Obtain parts from approved vendors as required.
- Communicate with management and support teams via email or phone for repair estimates and purchase order numbers.
- Perform work in compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other safety, health, and environmental policies.
- High School Diploma/GED and 3 years of related experience (or equivalent).
- Possess a set of hand tools required for the job.
- Obtain ASE T8 (PMI) certification within 18 months.
- Pass a DOT‑regulated pre‑employment background screening and DOT physical, or provide a DOT medical card with >4 months remaining.
- At least 21 years of age.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain a Driver Qualification File.
