Construction Materials Tester (EPSA III) - Denver
LocationDenver, Colorado
OverviewPosition open to Colorado state residents only. Provides technical assistance to the Flexible Pavement Lab by implementing test procedures, operating equipment, recording results, and submitting reports to engineering staff.
Responsibilities- Assist lab personnel with Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) testing in the Flex Lab according to FMM and LMTP.
- Perform gradation and volumetric testing, including CP 51, CP 44, CP 55, CP 31, CP 32, CP‑L ‑5120, CP‑L 5106, CP‑L 5115, and CP‑L 5109.
- Operate equipment such as vacuum pumps, bulk tanks, mechanical splitters, shakers, washers, ovens, stabilometers, gyratory compactors, and compression machines.
- Log, distribute, and manage a wide range of samples—soils, aggregates, concrete, steel, asphalt cement, and asphalt mixes.
- Maintain, repair, and calibrate Flexible Pavement Lab testing equipment and keep calibration records according to AASHTO R18.
- Assist the lab Inspection Coordinator with statewide equipment checks and participate in AMRL round‑robin sample setups, testing, and reporting.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Typical schedule:
7:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday‑Friday. - Approximately 5% in‑state/overnight travel for inspections and round‑robin sampling.
- Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, and windy conditions; drive CDOT vehicles.
- Handle lifting up to 50 lbs occasionally, 20 lbs frequently, and 10 lbs regularly.
- Exposure to fumes, noxious odors, dust, and other hazardous materials.
- Work in proximity to moving machinery and high‑speed traffic; possible elevation up to 12,000 ft.
- High school diploma or GED.
- At least two (2) years of experience in construction inspection, laboratory materials testing, or construction documentation.
- One year of that experience must involve materials testing.
- Completion of engineering, construction management, or related coursework can substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
- Proven success performing the duties listed above.
- State service experience related to the position.
- Integrity and strong work ethics.
- Familiarity with CDOT Field Materials Manual, Laboratory Manual of Test Procedures, and AASHTO standards.
- Experience with HMA testing and related test methods.
- Knowledge of equipment maintenance and calibration.
- Excellent mathematical, analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team; manage multiple assignments under tight deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and safety commitment.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel) and SAP.
- Must obtain LABCAT ABC certifications within six months of hire and complete Radiological Safety & Nuclear Gauge Operation certification prior to certification.
- Must pass a pre‑employment screening that may include SSN trace, criminal records, public court records, educational records, and driving records.
- Valid Colorado driver license required for CDOT positions that involve vehicle operation.
- Complete the CDOT Application for Announced Vacancy.

- Submit DD‑214 if veteran.
