As a Nurse I in the Medical Services work unit, you will provide clinical nursing skills for a wide range of medical procedures, assessments, and treatments across multiple programs, including Infection Control, Employee Health, Medical Clinic, Specialty Clinics, Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), Laboratory, and Central Medical Supply/Sterile Processing. The role requires flexibility, excellent communication, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Responsibilities- Provides Nursing Care, Direction and Support:
- Provide nursing care and support for all Medical Clinic services and programs.
- Perform common diagnostic tests (e.g., electrocardiograms, ear irrigations, spirometry, hearing screens).
- Assist consultants with specialty clinics.
- Participate in all types of medical examinations, treatments, and minor procedures.
- Use independent nursing skills to manage and treat conditions within the scope of an RN.
- Train and educate support staff in various tasks.
- Ensure medical supplies are ordered, stocked, and not expired; manage medications, controlled substances, and pharmacy returns.
- Maintain safety of all medical equipment, including regular crash cart checks.
- Adhere to Nursing Service, Infection Control, and hospital standards, policies, and procedures.
- Maintain updated skills, knowledge, and competencies through continuing education, resource development, literature review, and clinical supervision.
- Assist Staff Development with curriculum development and training for ECG use, rhythm interpretation, BEHR documentation, billing, and competency assessment.
- Support COVID response interventions, assess staff for COVID illness, determine return‑to‑work decisions, perform contact tracing, and consult with infection preventionists and physicians.
- Supports the Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) Program:
- Provide professional nursing direction and support for patients undergoing ECT.
- Lead recovery RNs in real‑time nursing support during patient recovery from anesthesia.
- Conduct patient chart reviews and ensure proper pre‑ECT workup.
- Assess mental status and physical condition, prepare monitoring equipment, and supervise recovery period.
- Train nursing staff in ECT procedures and post‑treatment recovery.
- Communicate regularly with psychiatrists, anesthesiologists, and/or medicine physicians about patient status.
- Perform ongoing evaluations of targeted symptoms for treatment effectiveness.
- Audit ECT records for completeness.
- Supports the Employee Health Program (in conjunction with Infection Control):
- Assist with scheduling, documenting, and completing employee health screens for onboarding staff, contractors, volunteers, and students.
- Verify new staff meet all employee health requirements before patient interaction.
- Administer Mantoux TST, interpret results, provide guidance, and educate new staff.
- Administer staff vaccinations (Influenza, Hepatitis B, COVID) per hospital policies.
- Perform N95 fit testing for all new staff and as needed.
- Collect and report communicable disease data, including COVID, and develop isolation/quarantine guidelines.
- Participate in after‑hours Employee Health On‑Call RN rotation for COVID reporting and contact tracing.
- Monitor lab results and report to the Infection Preventionist and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.
- Provides Support for Other Medical Services Section Programs:
- Assist with clinical and administrative tasks for all programs.
