Position Summary

This position provides skilled nursing care for the incarcerated offender in outpatient clinic, infirmary, or specialized cell house settings for acute care, chronic support, and emergency interventions. LPNs are responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Documents in an accurate and timely manner to provide comprehensive offender medical records;
  • Provides standardized patient education within established nursing guidelines;
  • Transcribes medical orders and reports at change of shifts;
  • Preserves confidentiality;
  • Provides physical care and treatments, administers medications, collaborates on treatment plans, employs infection control measures, provides referral to appropriate Clinical Services staff for new arrivals, crisis intervention, interviews and triages offenders, and performs instruction and orientation;
  • Assists physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with minor medical and surgical procedures;
  • Ensures ordering and restocking of medications and supplies;
  • May occasionally be required to participate in restraining an offender primarily for medical reasons;
  • Delivers PO, IM, IV, SQ, SL medications to offenders in medication lines, infirmaries, specialized cell houses, and PRN;
  • Observes and reports the physical and emotional condition of offenders including the effectiveness of medications and treatments during sick line emergencies;
  • Promotes and is accountable for safety and security of the clinical environment through observations and contraband control including counting syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and key control;
  • Operates a variety of clinical equipment as available in the unit;
  • Follows Life Safety policies and informs supervisor of safety or security violations;
  • Attends training programs as assigned, including 2-day self-defense to ensure self-protection skills;
  • May be required to work any shift, weekends, and holidays.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Applicant must possess a current, valid Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).

  • Ability to create accessible documents that follow plain language guidelines with accessibility in mind;
  • Excellent discernment and decision-making skills;
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions;
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts on a full-time basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Intravenous Certification;
  • Long-term and acute care experience;
  • Experience as an LPN in a correctional environment.
