General PurposeThe Camp Nurse is responsible for the daily health care services provided at a Girl Scouts of Colorado (GSCO) camp property. This position is responsible for providing daily, weekly, and on‑call health care and medication administration for all persons, working under the technical supervision of an on‑call licensed physician. Additionally, this role supports the property, hospitality, operational, program, & cabin leadership team as needed as part of the camp team.
A primary function of this, and every other job at camp, is to ensure that each member, guest and visitor receives the highest caliber of service.
- Ensure the implementation of health and emergency procedures as written in the Camp Health Plan, Medical Standing Orders, and in accordance with the Colorado Dept. of Health & Child Protective Services and American Camp Association (ACA) standards.
- Work within the communicable disease plan to ensure safe and healthy practices and measures are taken to help mitigate the spread of illness.
- Provide support in routine health care and emergency situations in consultation with the Executive Director in keeping with established health care guidelines and daily standing operating procedures.
- Work with camp health team and camp directors to provide health care for all persons within camp program established guidelines.
- Communicate and advise the Executive Director and staff on camper accommodations to provide for special medical/health/wellness considerations.
- Maintain constant and professional communication with caregivers regarding the health care and services provided to campers.
- Participate as an active member of the camp staff team within all aspects of camp program.
- Provide advice to the health staff regarding health issues which arise.
- Provide in‑person Medication Administration Training for staff who will be delegated to assist in the proper dispensing of medication.
- Ensure proper execution of procedures for dispensing routine medications and charting of all medication.
- Review medical & health treatment log forms, illness, injury, and incident reports and MARs.
- Follow up to assure campers receive medications as directed and follow up on treatment given.
- Communicate to health staff and the Executive Director the recommendations for supply/equipment needs, changes in general procedures, and about site hazards.
- Maintain good relationships with health and emergency service providers and the public.
- Camper Leadership & Supervision
- Act ‘in loco parentis’ regarding the health services for all campers in overnight camp sessions.
- Support & counsel campers in daily living, camp activities, and developing peer relationships.
- When applicable, provide overnight supervision and care to campers and staff when housed in the Health Center.
- Staff Leadership & Supervision
- Perform ongoing health/medical/first aid support for camp staff and campers.
- Continually advise all staff on camp-wide health procedures & practices.
- Provide health/first aid advice to all staff according to procedures.
- Verify first aid and medical reports given by all staff; follow up on treatment given.
- Monitor staff first aid treatment throughout the season.
- Provide supervision and guidance to the health team, including Health Assistant(s) and Wellness Supervisor.
- Administration
- Manage administrative responsibilities in a timely, independent, and detail-oriented manner.
- Accountable for documentation and review of the health/medical practices and procedures at camp.
- Participate in camper and staff feedback forms as necessary for the overall camp’s strategic planning.
- Interact with digital systems including Work Bright, Camp Minder, Office
365, Slack, Instagram, & Facebook. - Respect the confidential nature of all information pertaining to staff, volunteers, and campers.
