Job SummaryThis position serves as an expert within the acute care program who works independently or as a team leader to assess the care, treatment and quality of care provided by acute care health care facilities through observations, interviews, and record review. The consultant must possess specialized clinical experience and uses expertise, training, and clinical judgment to evaluate evidence and determine compliance for each facility on a case‑by‑case basis.
The role requires high-level autonomy, critical thinking, flexibility, and diligent completion of assigned work.
- Conduct surveys of acute care facilities, including hospitals, long‑term acute care hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, critical access hospitals, rural health clinics, federally qualified health clinics, birth centers, community clinics, free‑standing emergency departments, end‑stage renal disease clinics, and ambulatory surgical centers.
- Observe patient care, interview staff, review records, and evaluate compliance with federal and state statutes, regulations, guidelines, policies, and procedures.
- Prepare detailed and factual reports, maintain accurate documentation, and communicate findings to stakeholders.
- Collaborate with other teams to provide technical assistance and guidance on best practices.
- Resident of the State of Colorado at the time of application.
- 9 years of professional nursing experience in a critical care or specialized setting, plus training, mentoring, or work‑lead level experience.
- Valid registered nurse license from the Colorado Board of Nursing or an equivalent state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact.
- Alternate: 5 years of critical‑care nursing experience plus a bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Biology, Epidemiology, Public Health, or a closely related field, and the same RN licensure requirement.
- Experience and education must be documented in the application; missing documentation may disqualify the candidate.
- Knowledge of acute care facility clinical operations.
- Knowledge of regulations applicable to acute care facilities.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Analytical skills to evaluate facts, data, and evidence.
- Ability to observe, electronically record, & interpret information.
- Competency in technology used in a health care setting.
- Computer literate and able to use information technology effectively.
- Experience writing clear, concise, professional reports.
- Pre‑employment background check.
- Active, unrestricted RN license required.
- Capability to travel independently or in groups up to 75% of the time; overnight travel may be required.
- Ability to work in environments with contagious diseases; PPE will be provided.
- Availability for emergencies and Continuity of Operations Plan activations; immediate reporting required.
- Proficiency in word processing and current communication technology.
- Annual influenza vaccination or mask use, and mandatory COVID‑19 vaccination (details in note).
- Annual fit testing for N‑95 masks and training in donning/doffing PPE.
- Occasional evening, night, weekend, or holiday work as required.
- Ability to exert up to 45 lbs. and to walk or stand for extended periods.
- Use of state fleet vehicles (conditions apply).

- Fully vaccinated status defined per Colorado public health guidance.
- Unofficial transcripts if using education to substitute for experience.
