Korbel Ameri Corps Mass Care Community Resilience Program Coordinator at American Red Cross Disaster Cycle Services
The Korbel Ameri Corps Program provides opportunities for students enrolled at the University of Denver’s Josef Korbel School of Global and Public Affairs to serve their communities. Through their service, Korbel Ameri Corps members will support public service organizations improving food, housing, healthcare, employment, and economic stability among Denver residents. Korbel Ameri Corps members will acquire sector-specific knowledge and skills, preparing them for future careers in public service.
Organization Overview:
It is the Red Cross’ mission to help people affected by disaster meet their emergency needs that include shelter, food, clothing, and health and mental health services.
The International Services (IS) mission is to reconnect families separated by crises, help to rebuild communities devastated by disasters, and work alongside health organizations to eliminate global disease. The International Services of the Red Cross works every day to provide relief.
Service Position Summary:
The Ameri Corps member will support the Regional Disaster Cycle Services (DCS) department, with a specific focus on strengthening Mass Care readiness and capacity. Their primary role will be to enhance the region’s ability to effectively respond during disaster events by contributing to volunteer coordination, logistical preparedness, and program evaluation.
During their service, the member will:
- Complete essential Red Cross training in Mass Care roles including sheltering, feeding, distribution of emergency supplies, and reunification, as well as complete defensive driving and organizational orientation.
- Build cross-departmental knowledge by meeting with teams across Biomedical Services, Volunteer Services, Humanitarian Services, Fundraising, and Training to understand how various departments collaborate during disaster response.
- Support operational readiness by contributing to Mass Care goals through assigned projects such as organizing and conducting facility surveys for response sites, updating supply kits, building volunteer and partner relationships, and assisting in local disaster responses based on their trained roles.
- Lead community-based resiliency efforts by collaborating with staff and community partners to develop a Community Resiliency Framework throughout the region. This includes:
- Evaluating existing training-to-service delivery gaps,
- Strengthening and diversifying volunteer recruitment and engagement strategies,
- Conducting needs assessments through surveys and forums, and
- Supporting staff in designing improved programming based on evaluation findings.
- Opportunity to deploy for two weeks with the American Red Cross as a volunteer. If this opportunity arises, the Red Cross will cover the cost of flights, hotel accommodations, and meals during the deployment. Additionally, the Red Cross provides insurance coverage for all volunteers while they are deployed.
This position addresses a critical organizational need by increasing the Red Cross’s ability to deliver timely, effective, and equitable Mass Care services, while also enhancing community preparedness and volunteer engagement in high-risk regions.
- Receive a monthly stipend dependent on number of hours earned. For the 300-hour slot, receive $600 per month, for a total stipend of up to $3,000. For the 450-hour position, receive a monthly stipend of $900, for a total stipend of up to $4,500.The stipend is taxable and paid in equal increments every month throughout the term of service.
- Earn a Segal Education Award. For the 300-hour position, earn up to $1,565.08 upon successful completion of the term service. For the 450-hour position, earn up to $1,956.35 upon successful completion of term of service. This federal education award may be used to pay educational expenses at eligible post-secondary institutions or to repay qualified students loans.
