This recruitment is for the Denver Correctional Complex. This posting may be used to fill future vacancies at this location.

Position Overview

The Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) has developed the Boiler Operator Supervisor Trainee Program to train individuals in correctional facility boiler operations. This trainee position is classified as a Correctional Officer I. It provides on‑the‑job training in boiler operations while maintaining the safety and security of the assigned correctional facility. Upon successful completion the selected candidate may advance to a Correctional Support Trades Supervisor (CSTS I) position, which requires additional boiler experience and a Stationary Engineer license within one year of promotion.

Safety

and Security
  • Maintain safety and security of facility and work sites; train inmates in proper use of tools, equipment and chemicals; enforce security procedures by conducting site searches and monitoring inmate behavior.
  • Initiate verbal reprimands when warranted and control inmates physically with restraints or "use of force" techniques if necessary.
  • Supervise and escort inmates, perform inmate counts and transportation, and respond to emergency situations such as fights, fires and escapes.
  • Document incidents and submit required reporting in accordance with agency regulations.
Operations
  • Ensure safe, efficient, compliant and cost‑effective completion of all phases of boiler house operations.
  • Conduct regular checks, read gauges, work on water heaters, air handlers, heat exchange pumps and steam traps.
  • Perform preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance on boilers and associated peripheral systems.
  • Collaborate with plumbing, HVAC, electrical and general maintenance trades as required.
Supervision
  • Provide supervision of assigned inmate workers and promote high performance standards.
  • Participate in hiring of inmates, train and instruct them in boiler operations and proper use of tools.
  • Create work schedules, assign tasks, conduct job evaluations, monitor hours, post wages and maintain records.
Compliance and Budget
  • Ensure compliance with Colorado Boiler Code, International Mechanical Code, American Correctional Association and all applicable policies and regulations.
  • Track usage of tools, equipment and parts, expenses and waste to remain within budget and reduce inefficiencies.

Position may require additional hours or shifts to maintain security. Work is conducted in close proximity to industrial equipment in a relatively loud and busy environment.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED certificate.
Conditions of Employment
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • No felony convictions or domestic violence history.
  • Possess a valid, unrestricted driver's license.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • Successfully pass all modules of the six‑week CDOC Basic Training.
