The Facilities & Operations Manager plays a critical role in ensuring MCA Denver’s physical spaces function at the highest level—supporting the presentation of contemporary art, ensuring visitor and staff safety, and maintaining the museum’s long-term infrastructure integrity. This role is responsible for the maintenance, safety, and operations of MCA’s 27,000 square foot LEED Gold-certified building and a leased, 400-seat auditorium.
Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesPriority 1:
Facility Management
This role requires a proactive and hands-on approach to maintaining and improving the museum’s physical environment, ensuring all systems operate efficiently to support daily operations and visitor experience.
- Monitor, inspect, maintain, and manage the repair of building life services including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, janitorial, fire, and building security systems.
- Perform general maintenance and repairs and manage the facilities log.
- Monitor and maintain the building’s temperature and humidity levels consistent with art preservation standards.
- Support event and programming production with facilities logistics, including setup and breakdown.
- Maintain and organize the Museum’s offsite storage area.
- Develop and manage facility-related operating procedures and policies.
- Maintain digital and physical records of maintenance schedules and repairs.
- Develop short- and long-term facilities plans that outline immediate priorities, future needs, and a strategic vision for the organization’s physical infrastructure.
Safety & Compliance
This role demands a vigilant and detail-oriented mindset to uphold safety standards, ensure regulatory compliance, and create a secure environment for staff, visitors, and artwork.
- Ensure compliance with all safety and security protocols, developing contingency plans as necessary.
- Coordinate with local and state officials to comply with regulations and maintain required facility licenses/certificates including fire, elevator, and general operating licensure.
- Manage facility access procedures.
- Respond to facility emergencies, including alarms and fire systems.
- Perform daily walkthroughs of the facility to identify potential safety issues.
Financial Management
This role involves strategic and responsible financial stewardship of the facilities budget, requiring the ability to plan, track, and manage resources effectively to support both short-term needs and long-term infrastructure investments.
- Create (with the COO), manage, and adhere to the annual facility budget.
- Plan for longer-term capital expense and asset lifecycle replacement.
- Identify opportunities to reduce or repurpose facilities expenses.
Collaboration & Coordination
This role requires the ability to communicate and collaborate cross-functionally with departments to problem-solve facilities needs that also consider the needs and priorities of other teams.
- Coordinate with the Chief Operating Officer on new building projects, considering scope, budget, organizational mission, and risks.
- Coordinate with facility vendors to ensure systems are functioning optimally.
- Coordinate with internal teams to ensure the safety, security, and surveillance of installed artwork.
- Oversee contract services such as janitorial and garbage.
- Attend staff meetings and report on facility-related issues as needed.
- Conduct training for staff on facility-related topics.
- Assist with facility requirements for the Annual Gala and other development events.
Other Duties & Responsibilities include supporting overall departmental and organizational goals, with management rights to modify duties as needed. Supervisory responsibilities may include overseeing part-time maintenance support. The role requires safeguarding confidential information and interacting with managers and staff across the organization and external entities.
Job Requirements /Experience- Education: Technical degree preferred or equivalent experience.
- Experience: Minimum 5 years in facilities management; museum or library experience preferred. Relevant licenses are strongly preferred.
- Ability to perform minor repairs, read plans, and understand HVAC systems.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and work independently or as part of a team.
- Availability for days, nights, weekends, and 24/7 emergency response.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
Ability to lift up to 75 pounds, work standing or sitting for up to 8 hours, and perform various physical tasks as described.
Application Process- Full-time, exempt, salaried position with salary range $65,000–$70,000.
