About the Unit
The Tolling Maintenance Technician (Technician IV) works in the Colorado High Performance Transportation Enterprise (HPTE), a government‑owned business within the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). HPTE is now doing business as the Colorado Transportation Investment Office (CTIO). CTIO oversees the operation, maintenance, and performance of the entire Express Lanes network, including 176 lane miles of Express Lanes, 63 lane miles under construction, and 14 lane miles in development.
Aboutthe Position
The Tolling Maintenance Technician will assist the Tolling Maintenance Supervisor with oversight of toll road maintenance, repair, escalations, and reports. The primary focus is working with vendors who maintain equipment and devices on the Express Lanes network, which includes six operational corridors (C470, C70, I‑25 Segment 2, I‑25 Segment 3, I‑25 South GAP, and I‑70 Mountain Express Lanes (MEXL)) and three corridors under construction.
Yourduties and responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Assist the Tolling Maintenance Supervisor with oversight of toll road maintenance, repair, escalations, and reports, working primarily with vendors responsible for the maintenance of equipment and devices.

OSS™ and Tolling Access Portal (TAP) systems which relay information about damaged roadside equipment or devices. - Perform day‑to‑day monitoring of tolling systems and accompany the contractor maintenance team to Express Lanes to investigate equipment/device damage, determine needed repairs and work with contractors to ensure that they perform the necessary repairs according to specs/contracts and Standard Operating Procedures. Equipment includes cameras, VMS boards, antennas, lane controllers, loops, Remote Traffic Microwave Sensors (RTMS), and Toll Rate Dynamic Pricing Signs (TRDPS).
- Ensure that the contractors are performing maintenance and repairs within prescribed time frames outlined in the contract.
- Coordinate vendor/contractor installation of new equipment and oversee the installation to ensure equipment is installed according to specs.
- Work with CDOT Maintenance and/or vendors to facilitate road closures when necessary for installations.
- Coordinate with supervisor to ensure emergency repair contracts are completed.
- Ensure that accurate documentation of any issues is completed by the contractor.
- Monitor the maintenance ticketing process directly and provide guidance on the tickets to ensure they are properly updated and closed out in a timely manner.
- Coordinate with CDOT Intelligent Transportation Systems & Network Services (ITS) during events that are related to fiber outages or problems with the network that need to be repaired; work with the CDOT Roadway Technical Services (RTS) related to Toll Rate Dynamic Pricing Sign outages or problems with the roadside cabinets. Work with CDOT Maintenance when there is damage in Toll Lanes caused by the driving public.
- May provide training to address individual contractors’ gaps in knowledge.
- Perform physical inventory audits of spare parts.
- Follow Return Material Authorization (RMA) factory return programs.
- Regularly communicate with the vendor(s) to manage and control parts inventory, based on demand.
- Track transponder inventory.
- Generate reports that show overall maintenance performance.
- Routinely generate reports from the system to plan for device or equipment changes or upgrades.
- Capture trends and patterns and analyze for specific performance of equipment, toll point locations, uptime and other indicators related to performance, focusing on Service Level Agreement (SLA) metrics.
- Monitor contractor Key Process Indicators (KPIs); identify and report trends to the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Document device or software failures to ensure all punch list items are addressed before subsequent testing.
- Test new toll rates and algorithms to make sure that the software will change the toll rates expected to match the situation on the road.
