Persons hired as Police Cadets will and paid to attend a Colorado-certified Peace Officers and Standards Training (P.O.S.T.) academy in the Denver Metro area. A P.O.S.T. academy consists of learning the foundational concepts and laws required to work as a responsible police officer in a variety of activities including physical fitness, police patrol, investigation, crime prevention, traffic safety, community relations, non‑criminal police services, Colorado Revised Statutes, arrest control, defensive tactics, defensive driving, and basic firearms.
Candidates hired in this recruitment for this position must successfully complete the P.O.S.T. academy, successfully pass the P.O.S.T. certification test, obtain state certification, and sign a reimbursement agreement with the City of Commerce Upon completing the P.O.S.T process and starting the In‑house Training Academy, the Police Recruit will be promoted to a Police Officer to complete their training at the Commerce City Police Department.

A Police Cadet performs academic and law functions within a law enforcement training academy environment. Police Cadets are expected to strive for excellence in all areas of academics, physical fitness and practical applications. Police Cadets are expected to model the Department's values both during their attendance at the academy and during their off‑duty time. Police Cadets are expected to graduate from their academy and obtain their state P.O.S.T. certification.
Upon completion of the academy and certification Cadets may be promoted to Police Officer and will be expected to fulfill the essential duties and responsibilities for that position. Essential duties and responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by Police Cadets; they are not intended to be a comprehensive list of all duties, responsibilities and skills required, but will include the following:
- Exercise independent judgment and discretion in dealing with routine and unusual situations, and academy practices and procedures.
- Write reports; participate in individual development; attend all academy training classes and sessions; perform routine maintenance on assigned firearms and other Department issued equipment.
- Maintain contact with assigned Department supervisor; keep up to date with Department emails, policies and procedures; complete all administrative paperwork or assignments in a timely manner.
- Acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to complete the academy and promote to Police Officer.
- At least twenty (20) years old and will attain the age of twenty‑one (21) years upon completion of the P.O.S.T. academy;
- Possess a valid Colorado driver's license by the date of hire; and,
- Have a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) or high school equivalency certificate.
