This position is funded through a grant authorized by the Colorado Automobile Theft Prevention Authority (CATPA). Current funding has been renewed through the 25-26 Fiscal Year with a new expiration date of June 30, 2026. Renewal for next fiscal year will be sought, subject to CATPA approval.

Description of Job

This position is open only to Colorado state residents and investigates allegations of criminal activity to determine whether Colorado or federal law was violated. The role requires handling complex, multi-jurisdictional matters, including violations of the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act (COCCA). The position serves as the unit’s primary investigator to support and enhance the Attorney General’s Auto Theft Initiative (AGATI) program, which prosecutes multi-jurisdictional, organized, complex, or pattern behavior related to auto theft.

The investigator may partner with and assist any law enforcement agency on investigations and enforcement of laws across Colorado.

What You Will Do
  • Conduct full-service criminal investigations, including independent verification of allegations through interviews and evidence gathering.
  • Provide investigative and logistical support to federal, state, and local agencies; assist the State Grand Jury; offer specialized expertise to professionals; provide training and technical advice to governmental and professional audiences.
  • Serve as a liaison between AGATI and other grantees; assist in program outreach, attend task force intelligence meetings, coordinate with outside law enforcement, and assist prosecutors with prosecution actions and grant compliance.
  • Work regularly with prosecuting agencies and law enforcement at federal, state, and local levels in a cooperative manner.

Minimum Qualifications Please document all relevant experience in detail on your application. Experience will not be inferred or assumed. Part-time experience listed will be prorated.

Experience Only
Six years of professional investigative experience as a full-time sworn detective or sworn criminal investigator at the felony level for a government law enforcement agency, with filing felony-level criminal cases as the lead investigator.

Education & Experience
A combination of directly related education (e.g., Criminal Justice, Psychology, or Sociology) and professional investigative experience as a full-time sworn detective or sworn criminal investigator at the felony level for a government law enforcement agency, equal to six (6) years. Education may substitute for up to four (4) years; applicants must demonstrate at least two (2) years of investigative experience as a full-time sworn detective or sworn criminal investigator at the felony level to qualify.

If qualifying under education substitution, provide transcripts at application time. Foreign degrees require a translation/evaluation from an accredited institution.
