Korbel Ameri Corps Public Health Coordinator at Denver Department of Public Health and Environment
The Korbel Ameri Corps Program provides opportunities for students enrolled at the University of Denver’s Josef Korbel School of Global and Public Affairs to serve their communities. Through their service, Korbel Ameri Corps members will support public service organizations improving food, housing, healthcare, employment, and economic stability among Denver residents. Korbel Ameri Corps members will acquire sector-specific knowledge and skills, preparing them for future careers in public service.
Organization Overview

The Denver Department of Public Health & Environment(DDPHE) is dedicated to advancing Denver’s environmental and public health goals. DDPHE works collaboratively with city, state and community partners to conduct education, community engagement, and enforcement to ensure healthy people, healthy pets, and a healthy environment.
DDPHE carries out this mission through education, prevention, policy development, enforcement, emergency preparedness and response, and strong cross-sector partnerships. The department delivers a wide range of public health and environmental services, including disease prevention and investigation, behavioral health promotion, environmental and air quality protection, animal welfare and protection, emergency medical and public health preparedness, vital records, and death investigation.
DDPHE works collaboratively with community-based organizations, healthcare systems, academic institutions, city agencies, and state partners to address health inequities and improve outcomes for communities most impacted by structural and social determinants of health. Equity, inclusion, and community engagement are central to all departmental activities.
Service Position Summary
:
The Public Health Coordinator position will address critical capacity gaps related to community engagement, service navigation, data and evaluation, policy support, and emergency preparedness,across multiple public health and environmental health initiatives. Through supportive on-the-job learning and related classroom instruction using in-person and virtual formats, the Public Health Coordinator will gain the skills and knowledge needed to advance into a public and/or environmental health career.
Activities may include:
- Community Outreach and Education
:
Ameri Corps members will conduct outreach and education with individuals, families, and community groups to share factual, culturally and linguistically appropriate information about public health programs, services, and prevention efforts. This includes tabling, presentations, and collaboration with community-based organizations. - Service Navigation and Community Support
:
Members will assist community members in navigating health, behavioral health, environmental health, and social service systems by providing public health and government referrals, follow-up support, and resource coordination. - Data Collection, Evaluation, and Continuous Improvement
:
Members will support the collection and organization of outreach metrics, service data, and community feedback through surveys, listening sessions, and tracking tools to inform program improvement and accountability. - Policy Support and Implementation (Non-Advocacy):
Ameri Corps members will support staff by assisting with activities that help operationalize and evaluate existing public health policies. Tasks may include summarizing policy-related program materials, assisting with implementation tracking, supporting internal reporting, and compiling community feedback on how policies are experienced in practice. - Emergency Preparedness and Response Support

Members will participate in emergency preparedness training and support response activities under the City’s Emergency Operations Plan, providing surge capacity during public health emergencies.
