PERSONAL CARE PROVIDER

Summary:

Seniors Helping Seniors (SHS) works with elderly clients in their home that may require daily visits. Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)/Home Health Aid (HHA) will interact directly with elderly clients. The CNA/HHA for SHS is a mature, compassionate and patient person who is passionate about providing support to seniors. They provide support to clients by helping with Activities of Daily Living (ADL's) such as bathing, eating, mobility assistance, dressing, toilet hygiene as well as Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) that include shopping, cooking, medication reminders, light housework and companionship.

Every employee should be driven and possess empathy, patience, compassion, professionalism, reliability and an overall purpose to serve others.

Job Duties:
  • Assisting the patient or client with personal hygiene, ambulation, eating, dressing, shaving, physical transfer, and other duties as assigned.
  • Maintenance of a clean, safe and healthy environment, which may include light cleaning and straightening of the bathroom, straightening the sleeping and living areas, washing the patient ' s or client's dishes or laundry, and such tasks to maintain cleanliness and safety for the patient or client.
  • Other activities as taught by a licensed health professional employee or contractor of the home health agency for a specific patient or client and are restricted to the following:
  • Assisting with reinforcement of dressing;
  • Assisting with tasks associated with elimination
  • Assisting with the use of the bedpan and urinal
  • Providing catheter care including changing the urinary catheter bag.
  • Collecting specimens.
  • Emptying ostomy bags, or changing bags that do not adhere to the skin.
  • Assisting with the use of devices for aid to daily living, such as a wheelchair or walker;
  • Assisting with prescribed range of motion exercises;
  • Assisting with prescribed ice cap or collar;
  • Doing simple urine tests for sugar, acetone or albumin;
  • Measuring and preparing special diets;
  • Measuring intake and output of fluids, and
  • Measuring temperature, pulse, respiration or blood pressure.
  • Keeping records of personal health care activities.
  • Observing appearance and gross behavioral changes in the patient or client, reporting to the registered nurse.

Supervision of self-administered medication in the home is limited to the following:

a. Obtaining the medication container from the storage area for the patient or client; b. Ensuring that the medication is prescribed for the patient or client; c. Reminding the patient or client that it is time to take the medication as prescribed; and d. Observing the patient or client self-administering the medication. This can only be done after appropriate training.

  • Documents actions by completing forms, reports, logs, and records.
  • Maintains work operations by following policies and procedures.
  • Must maintain a certificate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Protects organization's value by keeping patient information confidential.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; participating in professional organizations; maintaining licensure.
Seniors Helping Seniors CNA's and HHA's are not permitted:
  • change sterile dressings,
  • to assist with medication
  • irrigate body cavities such as giving an enema,
  • irrigate a colostomy or wound,
  • perform a gastric irrigation or enteral feeding,
  • catheterize a patient,
  • administer medication,
  • apply heat by any method,
  • care for a tracheotomy tube,
  • provide any personal health service which has not been included in the service provision plan.
Requirements
  • Must hold a valid driver's license
  • Must have active automobile insurance
  • Must have documentation of proof of certificate or sufficient home health aide training consisting of 40 hours of training in the 16 subject areas stated under Section 400.497(1), F.S.
  • Physician Statement (must state you appear to be free from communicable diseases including T.B.)
  • Current CPR certification via a classroom course, not online.
