Job Summary and Qualifications

Position Summary:

The Surgical Certified First Assistant (CFA) is a specially trained individual who is able to participate in and actively assist the surgeon in completing operations safely and expeditiously by helping to provide exposure, maintain hemostasis, and other technical functions. provides assisting services in both the preparation for and the performance of surgery. The CFA is experienced in all aspects of aseptic technique, setting up the required equipment and sterile supplies as needed for their assigned cases, pulling cases as needed, and breaking down cases at the end of the procedure.

He/she is knowledgeable regarding instrumentation, equipment and supply needs for all types of surgical procedures. These include, but are not limited to tissue handling, wound retraction/exposure, positioning, aseptic practices, providing hemostasis and suturing of tissue, as directed. The CFA performs delegated duties consistent with his/her scope of practice and functions within the philosophy and overall plan of care delivery.

The CFA may rotate to areas other than his/her assigned service area/s, and will perform only those duties for which he/she has demonstrated competency. Additional responsibilities may include orienting/onboarding new employees and overseeing shift operations with schedules, assignments and coordination of resources.
