The Work UnitThe work unit exists to prevent radiation injury to persons and contamination of the environment by regulating the possession, use, handling storage, transportation and disposal of radioactive materials. This is accomplished by issuing radioactive materials licenses and conducting compliance activities. Natural occurrences of radioactive materials in the environment are investigated for possible health risks to populations and to determine if regulatory control of the materials for protection of citizens is warranted.
Whatyou will be doing
This position exists to review basic, uncomplicated types of Radioactive Materials License applications—new, renewal, amendment, and termination—send Requests for Information when required, write specific licenses, answer written and telephone inquiries about Radioactive Materials Licenses and Inspections, accompany inspectors on License Compliance Inspections, and participate in the department’s response to incidents of radioactive materials mistakes and/or accidents.
Job Duties Radioactive Materials Inspections- Inspect licensees under direct supervision or as a team member to verify proper use of radioactive material, including examination of records such as personnel monitoring, leak testing, deliveries, shipping and disposal, and incident reporting.
- Examine facilities, including areas of use, preparation, storage, transport vehicles, and shipping/receiving areas.
- Travel independently throughout the state to conduct inspections.
- Review applications for new licenses, renewals, amendments, and terminations under direct supervision, ensuring completeness and compliance with regulations.
- Assess device specifications, user qualifications, and site labeling and verify that usage levels do not exceed manufacturer specifications.
