Overview

This Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) posting will be used to fill vacant positions assigned to the Denver Complex, located in Denver. The Denver Complex includes the Denver Reception and Diagnostic Center (DRDC) and Denver Women s Correctional Facility (DWCF). Current CDOC CO I employees are encouraged to apply for transfers through the posted Central Transfer Process. Applicants are encouraged to review the following Administrative Regulations (AR) to prepare for the comparative analysis process: 100 s and 300 s series.

Position

The Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of CDOC prison facilities statewide. CO I staff support the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry. They communicate professionally with inmates, families, coworkers, supervisors, managers and the public; cooperate with staff and work as part of a team while managing a diverse inmate population.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Work directly with inmates in locked facilities
  • Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas
  • Man an armed post (annual firearms certification)
  • Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles
  • Operate mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms
  • Control movement of inmates through the daily schedule
  • Escort and transport inmates in state vehicles
  • Monitor visiting areas
  • Conduct formal, informal and emergency counts
  • Cross check and maintain movement logs
  • Conduct contraband searches (canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches)
  • Inspect facility and cells for health, safety and sanitation
  • Inspect inmate mail and property
  • Respond to emergencies (fights, medical, fires, escapes) using established protocols
  • Maintain tool and key control, storage and documentation
  • Attend roll call and document incidents; communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors

Positions may require working additional hours and/or shifts to maintain 24/7 facility safety and security.

Minimum Qualification

High School Diploma or GED certificate.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Possess a valid and unrestricted driver s license; maintain a safe driving record; be able to operate a motor vehicle; full policy details available via the Colorado Division of Human Resources Driving Standards
  • Former state employees disciplinary terminations or resignations in lieu of termination may disqualify from future state employment unless extraordinary circumstances
  • Have no felony convictions as defined by applicable statutes; cannot have contact with offenders who have engaged in sexual abuse
  • Successful completion of a background investigation; provide official disposition of charges if applicable
