This position is for the Denver Correctional Complex. This recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies at this location. This position is only open to Colorado state residents.
Description Of JobThe Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) has developed the Boiler Operator Supervisor Trainee Program to train interested and qualified individuals in correctional facility boiler operations. This position is classified as a Correctional Officer I. This trainee position will receive on-the-job training (OJT) in correctional facility boiler operations, while maintaining the safety and security of the assigned correctional facility. This trainee program provides the opportunity to gain relevant work experience toward promotion to a CSTS I in the Physical Plant's Boiler Operations.
Upon successful completion of this trainee program, the selected candidate may have the opportunity to advance to a CSTS I position within CDOC, which requires 4 years of boiler operator experience or a combination of 2 years boiler operator experience and 2 years of correctional experience. Must obtain a Stationary Engineer license or equivalent within one (1) year of obtaining a CSTS I position.
Under the supervision of the Facilities Physical Plant Boiler Operations Staff, this position performs hands-on work alongside inmates and is trained in the following areas: safety and security, operations, supervision, and compliance/budget related to boiler operations.
Responsibilities- Ensure the safety and security of the general public, facility staff and inmates; supervise and train inmate workers; promote the agency mission and vision while maintaining integrity
- Safety and Security: maintain safety and security of facility and work sites; train inmates in the proper use of tools and materials; enforce security procedures; conduct searches; monitor environment and inmate behavior; initiate reprimands; escort inmates; respond to emergencies; prepare required reporting
- Operations: ensure safe, efficient, compliant, and cost-effective boiler operations; perform regular checks; read gauges; work on water heaters, air handlers, heat exchange pumps and steam traps; maintain boiler and peripheral systems
- Supervision: supervise inmate workers; recruit and train inmates; create schedules; assign work; conduct evaluations; monitor hours and wages; promote professional conduct
- Compliance / Budget: ensure compliance with boiler code and related standards; track tool and material usage, expenses and waste; identify inefficiencies to reduce waste and prevent theft
- May work additional hours or shifts to maintain security; operate in loud environments and near industrial equipment
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED required.
Conditions of Employment
