OverviewWe are seeking a hands‑on Director of Cost Accounting to lead a critical transformation from variable costing to standard costing across the organization. This role will own the end‑to‑end design, implementation, and governance of our standard costing framework and will play a central role in stabilizing cost visibility, margin accuracy, and inventory valuation as the business scales.
This is not a passive oversight role. The Director of Cost Accounting will be deeply involved in the mechanics of the build, working directly in the ERP, partnering closely with Accounting, Finance, Inventory, Supply Chain, and Operations to consolidate fragmented ownership and drive adoption. The ideal candidate is comfortable rolling up their sleeves while also operating as the enterprise authority on product cost and margin.
Responsibilities- Lead the transition from variable costing to standard costing, including defining costing methodology, assumptions, governance, and cadence for ongoing updates
- Personally drive the initial build and stabilization of standard costs, including materials, labor (where applicable), overhead absorption, and landed cost components
- Establish and own purchase price variance (PPV) methodology, reconciliation, and reporting, ensuring clear accountability and root‑cause visibility
- Act as the primary hands‑on owner of inventory valuation, COGS accuracy, and margin integrity, especially during the transition period
- Partner directly with IT and Finance to configure and validate ERP cost accounting logic (SAP preferred), ensuring outputs reflect real operational economics
- Lead detailed variance analysis and work directly with Operations and Supply Chain to resolve drivers, not just report outcomes
- Consolidate cost accounting responsibilities currently distributed across Accounting, Finance, and Inventory into a single, governed framework
- Translate cost and margin drivers into actionable insights for senior leadership, balancing technical depth with executive‑level communication
- Set expectations and drive adoption across non‑finance partners during and after the transition
- Establish policies, procedures, and internal controls that support GAAP compliance while remaining practical for a fast‑moving business
- Oversee close‑related activities, audits, physical inventory, and cycle counts with a focus on accuracy and repeatability
- Build and develop cost accounting talent as the function matures beyond the initial transformation
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- CPA or CMA strongly preferred
- 8+ years of progressive cost accounting experience in complex, inventory‑driven environments
- Demonstrated experience designing, implementing, and governing standard costing at scale
- Deep understanding of GAAP, particularly inventory accounting, landed cost capitalization, and COGS recognition
- Proven ERP cost accounting leadership experience; SAP experience strongly preferred
- Advanced Excel proficiency, including Power Query, Power Pivot, and complex cost modeling
- Experience with BI and reporting tools such as Power BI or Tableau; SQL familiarity a plus
- Strong leadership presence with the ability to influence cross‑functional partners and drive accountability
- Clear, confident communicator who can operate comfortably at both detailed and executive levels
