DRMS Accounting Supervisor; Accountant IV

Open Only to Current Residents of Colorado

Position available within the Division of Reclamation, Mining & Safety (DRMS) at the Colorado Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The role is responsible for managing grants, budgeting, and financial/accounting services for DRMS programs in accordance with GAAP, State Fiscal Rules, and applicable federal regulations.

• Manage all federal, state, local, and private grants and interagency agreements, including maintaining funding balances and tracking contributions.
• Reference and recommend grant submittals, proposals, and scopes of work in coordination with Division staff.
• Monitor funded projects, conduct compliance reviews, and ensure timely grant close‑out activities.
• Maintain the CORE accounting system, entering new grants and monitoring proper use of funds.
• Coordinate with DNR Controllers Office for accounting and financial matters and serve as a technical resource to Division staff.
• Supervise a team of three financial staff, providing leadership, coaching, and performance guidance.
• Research and interpret financial/accounting policies, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and departmental rules.

• 9 years of professional experience in accounting, financial management, budget development/implementation, or grants administration/compliance; OR
• Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, public administration, or a closely related field and 5 years of professional experience; OR
• Appropriate experience will substitute for the degree requirement on a year‑for‑year basis; CPA licensure will substitute for the degree and two years of experience.

• Current or former state experience relevant to this position.
• Proven leadership skills, ability to build consensus, and experience managing diverse teams.
• Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills with strong organizational abilities.
• Extensive experience in grants administration, accounting, and purchasing.
• Familiarity with the State’s electronic accounting system (CORE) and government finance.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and critical‑thinking skills; ability to apply GAAP and State Fiscal Rules.
• Ability to prioritize, manage large workloads, and demonstrate sensitivity to diverse perspectives.

• Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills including coaching, conflict resolution, facilitation, and negotiation.
• Federal grant reporting and cash management.
• Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, Uniform Guidance, and GAAP.
• Experience using CORE and Info Advantage; ability to analyze financial data and prepare ad‑hoc reports.
• Strong organizational, time‑management, and troubleshooting skills.
• Self‑motivation and ability to exercise sound judgment in problem resolution.

• Colorado residency required at the time of application.
• Must possess a current and valid driver’s license; occasional travel and exertion up to 20 lbs. may be required.
