General Purpose of the Position
The Mortgage Underwriting Supervisor will lead and manage the Mortgage Loan Underwriting team, ensuring the efficiency and sound credit decisions of loan applications in compliance with credit union lending standards, procedures, regulatory underwriting guidelines, and other secondary market requirements. Provides support to Mortgage Loan Personnel. This position requires a deep understanding of mortgage loan underwriting guidelines, industry trends, secondary market guidelines, a commitment to delivering excellent service to members, and strong leadership skills to foster a high-performing team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Creates a positive work environment and ensures optimum staffing. Provides direction and leadership to staff with emphasis on delivering excellence in member service, teamwork, and achieving team goals.
- Supervise and lead the daily operations of the underwriting team, ensuring adherence to credit union policies, procedures, compliance requirements and investor guidelines.
- Ensures Mortgage Loan Underwriter and Sr Mortgage Loan Underwriters evaluate applicant employment history, income including overtime, bonus, and commissions, borrower assets, borrower credit, and property condition meet Credit Union and/or investor guidelines.
- Support Mortgage department team members in the absence of Mortgage Supervisors.
- Review and approve loan applications, including 1st mortgage loans, Home Equity Lines and Loans, and Raw Land loan, ensuring that each meets credit union policies, procedures, compliance requirements and investor guidelines.
- Assist in the development and implementation of underwriting strategies, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
- Assists in verifying accuracy of HMDA reportable data for compliance.
- Provide support in training, coaching, and mentoring underwriting staff to enhance their skills and performance.
- Perform quality control audits on loan files, ensuring accurate documentation and risk mitigation strategies are in place.
- Conduct regular performance reviews, provide constructive feedback, and develop individualized training plans to enhance team members’ skills.
- Ensure that the underwriting team remains up to date on the latest trends in the mortgage industry and lending products.
- Monitor workflow and loan turnaround times, ensuring timely and efficient service delivery to credit union members.
- Stay current with federal, state, and local regulations affecting the credit union and underwriting practices.
- Ensure that the underwriting process adheres to all regulatory requirements, industry best practices, investor guidelines and credit union standards.
- Identify and mitigate potential risks in loan underwriting.
- Prepare and present comprehensive reports utilizing data analytics on lending activities, portfolio performance, and product development to senior management.
- Ensures self and team uphold compliance of applicable state and federal laws related to originating of residential mortgage loans. Ensures regulatory compliance including but not limited to: HMDA, RESPA, REG Z, REG B, Fact ACT and Safe ACT. Ensures compliance of FNMA DU, FHLMC LP and related secondary market underwriting guidelines. Adheres to all Federal and State laws and regulations applicable to the credit union, including the Bank Secrecy Act and OFAC.
- Requires to comply with NCUA requirements and register as a Mortgage Loan Originator and keep a current registration in compliance with the SAFE Act.
- Ensures the safety and security of Credit Union employees, property, and member information according to Credit Union guidelines.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
- 5 years of mortgage lending underwriting experience, preferably in a credit union or financial institution.
