Description

Project Canary is a climate technology company offering an enterprise data platform that helps energy companies improve and report on their emissions footprint. Project Canary builds high-fidelity sensors, ingests data from various other technologies and sources, and leverages proprietary analytics and models to deliver insights that operators can act on to reduce emissions. The data-driven technology enables energy operators to stop leaks faster, reduce risk, streamline reporting, and differentiate their operations for key stakeholders.

Project Canary is seeking an experienced corporate Controller who will report to the VP of Finance. The Controller will be responsible for all accounting operations to ensure the integrity of the company’s financial reporting.
The ideal candidate is attentive to detail, a creative problem solver, a Net Suite expert, and willing to jump into new situations and push priorities forward across the organization.

Key Responsibilities Financial Reporting & Compliance
  • Lead preparation of accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with GAAP
  • Manage month‑end and year‑end close processes, ensuring deadlines are consistently met
  • Lead annual audit and tax preparation with external auditors and tax firm – near‑term priorities include 2024‑25 tax returns and 2025 audit
  • Maintain and enhance internal financial controls
  • Coordinate and ensure compliance with all periodic filings, registrations, licenses, etc.
Accounting Operations
  • Own all general ledger activities, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll
  • Own all journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial analyses
  • Oversee cost accounting, inventory valuation, and revenue recognition processes
  • Establish and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and best practices
  • Manage fixed asset accounting and depreciation schedules – a key focus area will be cleanup of legacy Net Suite implementation issues and building long‑term scalable solutions
  • Implement scalable processes and systems across finance, billing, and procurement to support a multi‑product business with both SaaS and manufacturing operations
Planning & Analysis
  • Partner with FP&A Manager on budgeting, forecasting, and monthly variance analysis
  • Provide financial insights to support strategic decision‑making with VP Finance
  • Develop and track key performance indicators and financial metrics for Accounting function
  • Support due diligence efforts for potential capital raises and/or M&A processes
  • Support scaling of Utilities‑focused business segment, including rev rec and other matters
Team Leadership
  • Lead, mentor, and develop Staff Accountant (with opportunity to directly manage)
  • Establish and execute Accounting performance goals and quarterly OKRs
  • Identify training needs and foster professional development opportunities
  • Champion operational and fiscal discipline, continuous improvement, and transparency
  • Get the most out of software systems (Net Suite, Airbase, etc.) – track and analyze financial and operational data on a recurring basis to inform strategic and tactical decisions
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • 8+ years of experience in accounting and/or corporate finance
  • Hands‑on experience at a “startup” or venture‑to‑growth stage company (Series A‑C)
  • Recent roles in climate tech, SaaS, or advanced manufacturing environments is a plus – ideal candidate has a strong understanding of manufacturing cost accounting, supply chain, oil & gas operations, SaaS
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, economics, or business
  • Master’s degree in accounting or MBA is a plus
  • CPA required
  • Net Suite experience required, ideally expert knowledge
  • Proven ability to design, build, scale, and elevate accounting functions
