Position: Manager, Geoscience Powder River Basin (PRB)

Reports To: Director, PRB Asset Development

Role: The Manager, Geoscience – PRB provides leadership and oversight for subsurface interpretation, geologic and petrophysical modeling, development planning, and geoscience operations support. The role partners closely with reservoir engineering, drilling, completions, production, land, and regulatory groups to deliver high-quality subsurface evaluations and optimize development outcomes.

Responsibilities

Subsurface Leadership & Technical Oversight

  • Lead regional and local geo‑logical and petrophysical interpretation, integrating core, log, seismic, geochemical, and production data to refine models and guide development decisions.
  • Oversee geoscience inputs to SAPs, FDPs, and Success/Ambiguity/Failure (SAF) assessments.
  • Maintain and quality‑check development inventories and type curve areas (TCAs).
  • Assess geological risks and uncertainties and articulate impacts to development planning.
  • Represent geoscience in competitor intelligence reviews, lease sale evaluations, A&D screenings, unitization efforts, and regulatory hearings.

Development Planning & Operational Integration

  • Provide strategic geoscience leadership for the PRB asset, setting clear priorities aligned with business objectives and translating them into focused work plans.
  • Ensure technically sound well‑planning inputs—BHLs, targeting, spacing compliance, and subsurface operational guidance—integrated with drilling, completions, land, regulatory, and production teams.
  • Lead post‑well evaluations, capturing learnings from drilling metrics, geosteering, logs, and mudlogs to drive continuous improvement.
  • Build efficient workflows that support evaluation, data management, well planning, and development forecasting.

Cross‑Functional Collaboration & Communication

  • Share timely, relevant geoscience insights to support alignment across engineering, operations, land, regulatory, and technology teams.
  • Communicate technical recommendations, risks, changes, and underlying rationale clearly to technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Foster a collaborative environment that reinforces shared ownership of development outcomes.

People Leadership & Organizational Effectiveness

  • Model leadership presence by staying engaged, minimizing distractions, and demonstrating respectful, inclusive behavior.
  • Provide direct, constructive feedback and mentorship to geoscience staff to strengthen capability and performance.
  • Promote curiosity, innovation, and knowledge‑sharing to encourage continuous learning and improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies, confidentiality requirements, regulatory standards, and data integrity expectations.
  • Document key decisions, technical rationale, and follow‑through actions to support accountability and organizational learning.
Education and Experience
  • MS in Geology or Geophysics preferred; BS required.
  • 5+ years demonstrated experience leading or mentoring geoscience professionals.
  • 15+ years of subsurface technical experience with exposure to exploration, appraisal, and development programs; unconventional experience strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience/proficiency in any or all the following is highly preferred: a) Play‑concept development, b) Sequences stratigraphy, c) Subsurface risk & uncertainty analysis.
  • Proficiency in Geographix, Star Steer, Spotfire, and related geoscience tools (or ability to rapidly learn).
  • Excellent communication skills—able to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable insights.
  • Highly organized with strong prioritization skills; able to manage multiple work streams in a fast‑paced environment.
