Overview
Assistant Fire Protection Engineer
- Mission Critical (Denver) at Burns & McDonnell. The role focuses on assisting in the design of multi-discipline projects and the preparation of fire protection packages including fire suppression, fire alarm, smoke management and life-safety systems. Work on a variety of projects with a diverse portfolio and clients.
- Assist in the design, specification, and multi-discipline coordination of fire protection systems such as wet-pipe, dry-pipe, pre-action, deluge, and foam/water suppression; fire water supply infrastructure including storage tanks, pumps, piping, and appurtenances; outdoor suppression systems (monitors, spray, exposure protection); addressable and non-addressable voice evacuation fire alarm systems; initiation, supervision devices, and notification appliances; and releasing systems for pre-action, foam/water, and clean agent systems.
- Assist in performing and evaluating fire protection calculations including hydraulic analysis, battery calculations, and voltage drop calculations.
- Assist in evaluating building and life safety requirements including area and height limitations, construction types, fire-resistive assemblies, opening protections, occupancy classifications, hazards, egress, and active/passive smoke management systems.
- Assist in construction administration: coordinate with field personnel to resolve design issues, review shop drawings and calculations, conduct field inspections, and test fire protection systems.
- Assist in performing site evaluations and documenting existing fire protection systems.
- Assist in preparing and evaluating project budgets and cost estimates.
- Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies.
- Bachelor Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or related degree from an ABET-accredited program required, or bachelor degree in Fire Protection or related Engineering Technology from ABET-accredited program with successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
- Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.
- Basic knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
- Basic knowledge of building codes, fire codes, NFPA standards, FM Global datasheets, military standards, and refinery/industrial API guidelines is a plus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment; strong critical thinking skills.
- Proficient computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Strong attention to detail, facilitation, teamwork, organization, and problem solving skills; demonstrated leadership.
- Ability to obtain and maintain access authorization to facilities and data of existing/potential clients (e.g., DOE, aerospace, military, pharmaceuticals, laboratories).
- Engineers in Training (EIT) certification preferred.
- NICET certifications in Water-Based System Layout, Fire Alarm Systems, or Special Hazard Systems preferred.
$76,.00 Yearly. The compensation range is displayed in compliance with local/state regulations and reflects factors including education, qualifications, experience, and location. Total compensation includes base salary and eligibility for a discretionary year-end incentive bonus.
