This position is only open to Colorado state residents.
New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.
OverviewThis position verifies test results obtained by project personnel and provides specialized testing to assure compliance with specifications for highway construction projects. This position occasionally acts independently on projects, working long hours in remote locations to provide materials testing services out of the Region mobile voids laboratory.
Major Duties and ResponsibilitiesSpecialized Materials Testing and Quality Assurance
- Perform various standard tests of asphalt, concrete and soil materials in the Region and Mobile laboratories.
- Verify test results for field personnel and investigate any discrepancies for sampling or procedural errors on an ongoing basis.
- Assist with review of project specifications and determine which procedure to utilize for each sample.
- Perform nuclear asphalt gauge and asphalt ignition furnace calibrations as needed.
- Assist with inspection of project testing laboratories.
- Operates the mobile laboratory on selected projects.
- Compile and report test results using various computer programs.
- Receive and review test reports from Central Lab (Denver) and field personnel.
- Determine course of action when materials do not meet specifications.
- Compose simple spreadsheets and databases to calculate, report, analyze and store test results. These test results may include asphalt, concrete, soils, cover coat materials and salt and sand mixtures.
- Collaborate with other materials personnel to organize and conduct a materials training course for the Region.
- Train various personnel on new procedures and review current procedures.
- Train new employees in materials testing as they are hired.
- Document calibration activities/measurements to ensure compliance with CDOT HQ annual lab inspections.
- Ensure that the appropriate equipment is calibrated at the appropriate intervals throughout the year.
- Participate in the appropriate materials round robin testing as needed.
- Travel required during work hours throughout Southeast Colorado.
- Required to operate CDOT Vehicles
- Overnight travel may be required for remote projects and/or training.
- Night and/or weekend work may be required.
- May be required to handle nuclear gauges.
- May lift 50 lbs.
- Requires a current Colorado driver’s license.
