Summary - Principal Electrical System Engineer - Electrical Systems Lead (Space Systems)
The Ash Group is hiring a Principal Electrical System Engineer on behalf of our client (a global leader providing advanced systems and support in defense, aerospace, and security). This critical hybrid role serves as the Electrical Engineering Lead for space-based systems, managing a team and providing technical expertise throughout the program lifecycle, focusing on high-precision, high-reliability applications.

What You’ll Be Doing
- Provide technical leadership for a multidisciplinary system team (including optical, mechanical, power, thermal, and software) to define and develop discriminating electronics solutions for space payloads and bus power products.
- Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) in space-based electronics, including focal plane interface electronics, power conversion (DC-DC), single board computers, high-precision thermal control (cryo systems), and FPGA-based controllers.
- Lead the resolution of complex electrical hardware anomalies at the system level, determining root cause and corrective action for both engineering development and flight hardware.
- Conduct objective, quantifiable trade studies to guide critical architectural decisions, leveraging new technologies, supplier capabilities, and system modeling/simulation tools (DOORs, MBSE).
- Maintain end-to-end electrical compatibility, functional allocations, and margins across the entire system.
- Engage in hands‑on design, development, production, and test activities, ensuring adherence to quality and reliability standards for NASA, NOAA, DoD, and classified customers.
- Present analysis, findings, and designs to internal management and customers throughout all program phases (SRR, PDR, CDR, IV&V).
- Mentor junior engineers in mission understanding and electrical subsystem concepts.
What We’re Looking For
- BS or higher in Engineering or a related technical field plus 6 or more years of related experience (Master's or Ph.D. may substitute for 2 years of experience).
- Technical competence in all of the following: ROIC photodetector arrays, motor drives (3-phase, steppers, voice coils, and associated feedback), general analog circuitry,
FPGA closed-loop control
, DC-DC conversion/power distribution
, and strong grounding/EMI background. - Working knowledge of interface and design documentation (functional block diagrams, PCB design/layout/fabrication).
- Experience across the entire system lifecycle from concept, detailed design (analog, digital, FPGA), production, integration, test, launch, to operation support.
