Colorado Academy seeks candidates for the position of Upper School English Teacher. This is a full-time, ongoing appointment.
We seek candidates who have strong academic training—a Master’s degree is preferred, but not required—and expertise in the study of literature and demonstrated artistry in the teaching of writing (creative and analytical modes), as well as experience contributing to a high school program that creates an intentional curricular bridge between Grades 9 through 12 in terms of process, content, and skills.
Upper School English instructors are assigned four classes and an advisory—generally two upper-level electives and two foundational courses (Grades 9 and 10).
Candidates should have experience guiding students through content and analysis, emphasizing critical thinking, and teaching and conducting discussions and modeling civil discourse in a student-centered way. As importantly, we seek a candidate who has a demonstrated passion for literature, ideas, and discourse and a record of leveraging their own intellectual curiosity into effective practices that encourage a community of adolescents to think creatively and engage ideas deeply.
Ideal candidates will also bring a demonstrated commitment to—and expertise in—incorporating diverse texts and perspectives within any course.
Demonstrated intercultural competence:
The ability to understand and bridge diverse perspectives, identities, and lived experiences is a must.
Candidates should be eager to join a professional community where collaboration and innovation are valued, rich curricular conversations are common, and openness to growth is the norm. Excellent interpersonal skills are required.
The most successful candidates will approach their role as an advisor with a drive to better understand the emotional needs of their students and support a program where self-reflection, empathy, and flexibility are the goals.
All teachers at CA are expected to carry out the CA Mission,"Creating Curious, Kind, Courageous, and Adventurous Learners and Leaders," to support the vision of the Upper School, and to contribute to the life of the school outside of the classroom.
