Department: Chemistry

GENERAL SUMMARY

This position reports directly to the Chair of Chemistry within the Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Pathway and works collaboratively with other discipline faculty. The Dean for the STEM Pathway serves as this position’s second-level supervisor. The successful candidate will be a well-rounded faculty member responsible for instruction in all aspects of the Chemistry discipline. The primary purpose of the Chemistry Assistant Professor will be to teach general and organic chemistry courses and labs.

Duties

Teaching/Instruction

Primary teaching duties will be in general and/or organic chemistry courses and labs, with opportunities to contribute to chemistry-related courses in interdisciplinary programs, as needed. A full course load typically includes 15 credit hours per semester (4 lecture credits and 1 lab per course), with flexibility for administrative or related assignments.

Responsibilities include:

  • Core Chemistry Instruction:
    Deliver engaging lectures and labs that integrate core principles of general and organic chemistry with real-world applications.
  • Laboratory Training:
    Teach students essential general laboratory techniques, with opportunities to introduce advanced methods such as distillation, chromatography, spectroscopy, and other instrumentation used in chemistry and related applied fields
  • Curriculum Development:
    Lead the design, revision, and implementation of curricula in chemistry programs. This includes creating and implementing chemistry lecture and laboratory courses, addressing emerging fields and applications in chemistry.
  • Program Enhancement:
    Collaborate with faculty to create and refine Chemistry degree pathways and support courses. This may include designing interdisciplinary chemistry-related courses or certifications that integrate with other programs.
  • Class Preparation and Assessment:
    Design inclusive, student-focused lessons for diverse instructional modalities (face-to-face, hybrid, and online). Use creative assessment methods to ensure alignment with student learning outcomes and program goals.
  • Institutional Service:
    Participate in departmental initiatives, accreditation efforts, and student advising to enhance the overall effectiveness and relevance of the Chemistry program.

Faculty are expected to demonstrate innovative teaching strategies, a commitment to equity and inclusion, and a dedication to fostering student success both within and beyond the classroom.

Service

In addition to teaching, this position requires active service to the Chemistry department and institution.

Responsibilities include:

  • Curriculum Leadership:
    Take a leading role in the development and alignment of Chemistry courses and programs, ensuring they meet industry needs, incorporate current scientific advancements, and foster student engagement.
  • Develop new courses or programs, such as specialized tracks in analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, or chemistry-related interdisciplinary fields.
  • Collaborate on chemistry-related curriculum for interdisciplinary programs.
  • Faculty Mentorship and Development:
    Mentor adjunct instructors, provide professional development opportunities, and promote a collaborative departmental culture focused on innovation and equity.
  • Program Coordination and Operations:
    Assist in departmental operations, including course scheduling, staffing, and budgeting.
  • Community and Industry

    Collaboration:

    Engage with industry professionals and advisory boards to ensure Chemistry curricula align with workforce needs and emerging opportunities.
  • Scholarly Growth:
    Engage in professional development and scholarly activities to stay current in the field of Chemistry, with an emphasis on areas like analytical techniques, curriculum innovation, and interdisciplinary applications.
Minimum Qualifications

Education (Minimum/Required)

  • Master’s degree in Chemistry (or higher) or a related degree with at least 18 graduate credits in Chemistry.

Experience: (required/minimum)

  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and assess Chemistry curricula that align with academic and industry standards.
  • At least one year of successful Chemistry teaching experience at the community college or baccalaureate level.
  • Evidence of culturally responsive teaching practices that support equity and inclusion for underrepresented and minoritized student populations.
  • Proficiency in using instructional technology and innovative teaching methods to enhance student engagement and success.

Education: (Preferred)

  • Emphasis on general chemistry with ability to teach organic and/or analytical chemistry
