Current 1st Year Graduate Student Position Only. This position will be for the remainder of the School Year. Ongoing employment for the school year dependent on performance and availability.
- Coaches meet with students one-on-one to assist in the organization and planning of academic, personal, social, and professional commitments and to provide support for accomplishing short- and long-term goals associated with those commitments, leading to academic success.
- Coaches offer a combination of both in-person and virtual (zoom) appointments.
- Student Success Coaches also host workshops on a variety of topics pertinent to the student body. Coaches can research and develop resources and sessions to serve the student body better. Coaches also work with other campus partners to provide individualized plans, resources, and workshops designed to maximize student performance and success.
- Over winter, spring, and summer breaks, Student Success Coaches assist the Office of Student Success in reaching out to undergraduate students who have not registered for courses for the following term (unregistered student outreach).
- Over winter break and summer break, Student Success Coaches can offer virtual appointments to students.
- Collaborate with the Communications & Social Media Assistant on potential content for social media pages.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to learn presentation skills and develop skills workshops
- Ability to use tact, diplomacy and conscientiousness when coaching/mentoring diverse student populations
- Initiative, follow-through and reliability
- Adaptable and flexible
- Adept at managing/creating your own schedule
- Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills.
- Have an understanding of, and sensitivity to, transition concerns and obstacles faced by college students.
- Have the ability to relate to others from a variety of backgrounds as well as a genuine desire to work with, mentor, and support undergraduate students.
- Ability to relate effectively with students, institutional personnel, and the public.
- Ability to encourage and empower students to make their own decisions.
- Ability to maintain private and sensitive information.
- Excellent computer and organizational skills.
- Ability to present to small to medium size groups (up to 50 students).
Required Qualifications:
- Actively enrolled in or will be enrolled (for school year) in a Master’s Program or PhD in higher education, student affairs, education, social work, counseling psychology, sports psychology, communication studies, educational counseling, or related field.
- Experience with coaching/mentoring and interpersonal skills with diverse undergraduate & graduate student populations
- Be available to participate in intensive training in Winter Quarter (will determine dates and times based on your class schedule).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prefer a candidate with experience in success coaching/mentoring, advising, or curriculum development.
- Comfortable with public speaking or desire to learn.
- Prefer a candidate that has graduated with their undergraduate degree within the last 5 years to support the near-peer model.
- The main office for Student Success Coaching is in the Community Commons, 3rd floor, suite 3100.
- There are two dedicated officesto student success coaching. Coaches can use that room for appointments, however Coaches are also able to meet with their students in another quiet mutual space in the building or around campus.
- You are not required to have your meetings in suite 3100.
- Noise level is quiet to moderate.
- Flexible work hours (design your work schedule around your classes).
Physical
Activities:
- Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period.
- Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.
Compensation and Benefits:
- This position is eligible for federal work-study or non-work study.
- Students will be paid $19.29/hr with the opportunity for yearly increases, dependent on performance.
