Responsibilities

This position provides routine and emergency medical care, on-call assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of inmates in one or more prison clinical settings. Physicians are responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Conducting medical/physical examinations
  • Ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests and diagnosing medical conditions
  • Prescribing medications and treatment
  • Educating patients about preventive health care
  • Ensuring minor medical procedures are performed on-site
  • Accountable for the work product of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants; includes supervision and professional development activities
  • Providing medical services to a daily patient caseload including chronic care, sick calls, emergencies and routine physicals
  • Participating in the monthly on-call schedule and providing on-site assistance as needed
  • Providing instruction and training to other health care professionals
  • Providing medical advice to other organizational units or health care specialties
  • Advising management on medical programs, treatment standards and clinical pathways
  • Ensuring documentation, referrals, and reporting are completed per DOC regulations and standards
  • Maintaining health records and coordinating housing/work restrictions and consultations
  • Interim or ongoing involvement in restraining inmates for medical reasons when required
  • Attending quarterly medical review board meetings and other division meetings
Minimum Qualifications
  • Licensed to practice medicine in Colorado as a Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathy
  • Board eligible (completed residency) or board certified in one of:
    Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, or Preventive Medicine
