Mission of Role

The Denver Emergency Shelter Attendant is a dual‑function position responsible for security monitoring, janitorial services, fire watch supervision, and direct guest support within 24/7 activated emergency shelter environments. This role is critical to maintaining safety, sanitation, fire prevention, guest wellbeing, and operational continuity during cold‑weather activations and emergency shelter operations. Staff in this role uphold Bayaud Works’ standards for trauma‑informed care, public safety, and dignified service delivery.

General Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities Shelter Attendant / Guest Support

Provide welcoming, respectful, and trauma‑informed assistance to all shelter guests. Conduct guest check‑in/check‑out, bed assignments, and bag‑and‑tag of belongings. Distribute meals, linens, hygiene supplies, and basic necessities. Monitor guest wellbeing and elevate medical, behavioral health, or safety concerns. De‑escalate conflicts and behavioral disruptions using trauma‑informed methods. Maintain accurate shift logs, guest counts, and incident documentation. Collaborate with shelter leadership, City staff, HOST partners, and outreach teams.

Security

& Safety Functions

Perform regular interior and exterior safety patrols of the shelter site. Monitor entrances/exits and control access points. Observe guest movement and facility conditions to ensure a secure environment. Respond to disturbances and elevate to emergency services when required. Enforce shelter safety rules and community standards in a trauma‑informed manner. Complete security‑related documentation and incident reporting.

Fire Watch Responsibilities

Conduct assigned Fire Watch duties during periods when fire protection systems are impaired or per City Fire requirements. Perform scheduled patrols for fire hazards, obstructions, and unsafe conditions. Ensure emergency exits, pathways, and fire suppression equipment remain clear. Maintain accurate Fire Watch logs in accordance with Fire Department requirements. Immediately report fire hazards or emergencies per emergency response protocols.

Janitorial & Facility Support

Perform routine and emergency cleaning of sleeping areas, bathrooms, common spaces, and exterior areas. Sanitize high‑touch surfaces according to public health and HOST sanitation standards. Remove trash, restock supplies, and monitor cleanliness throughout shifts. Assist with shelter set‑up, take‑down, and reconfiguration during activations. Report facility maintenance issues, hazards, or sanitation concerns.

Administrative & Compliance

Maintain strict confidentiality of guest information. Follow HOST, City of Denver, Fire Department, and Bayaud Works operating standards. Participate in required training:
Trauma‑Informed Care (TIC), Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), CPR / First Aid, DEI & Sensitivity Training (HOST‑required within 15 days of hire).
