Responsible for assisting in the leadership and direction of the Building Safety Division operations, interpretations, and enforcement of regulations, and clarification of applicable code and ordinance provisions to promote the highest standards of public safety, health, and welfare and provides direct management of the plan review and zoning enforcement functions of the City. DUTIES
  • Provide leadership to assigned staff and establish team performance measures, priorities, work sequences, and report team and program performance; ensure all activities are complete and in compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations, codes, and laws as well as City of Denton and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Monitor performance against existing or new performance targets, identify areas needing improvement and mentor staff on how to evaluate performance including seeking root causes and developing action plans.
  • Assist with the development of short and long‑range goals and plans; gather, interpret, and prepare data for studies, reports, and recommendations, and coordinate with internal stakeholders on departmental projects and activities to obtain successful outcomes.
  • Participate in coordinating information exchanges within the organization, external agencies, and the public then prepare, review, interpret, and analyze information, data, and reports; provide recommendations and presentations based on findings, as appropriate.
  • Assist in budget preparation that achieve objectives and ensure division functions and programs are within budget.
  • Oversee and perform functions for the dangerous buildings program including, but not limited to, conduct research, analyze data, prepare reports and presentations, and present materials on dangerous building cases at internal and external stakeholder meetings including the Health and Building Safety Commission and City Council, as appropriate.
  • Monitor, modify, and implement activities that protect the lives and safety of citizens through the enforcement of building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, energy, fuel gas codes, general design standards, Denton Development Code, Denton Municipal Code and other applicable Federal and State regulations.
  • Serve as a liaison and representative for employees and other internal and external stakeholders including, but not limited to, meetings, public events, training sessions, committees, and events.
  • Build and maintain community relationships including, but not limited to, neighborhood groups, school districts, businesses, chambers of commerce, universities, professional design firms, and contractors; seek opportunities to provide a positive image of the department and disseminate information about programs, services, and issues.
  • Stay up to date on current issues, trends, and developments in regulatory standards and building code requirements governing the construction industry; make recommendations and implement approved ordinances related to building codes.
  • Conduct field inspections, review building plans, investigate violations, process permits, and attend public meetings, as needed.
  • Investigate internal and external stakeholder concerns; perform research for issues coordinates and facilitates necessary actions to resolve concern as appropriate; when necessary, communicate directly for identification of service needs and address concern with appropriate written, verbal, or in‑person follow‑up.
  • Perform Building Official job functions in the event of their absence.
SUPERVISORY/BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Select, train, supervise, and evaluate staff; recommend assignment/assignment change, retention, discipline, and dismissal.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor budget; maintain accurate budget reporting; ensure that operations are cost‑effective, and funds are managed wisely.
