Overview

The Juvenile Probation Officer performs professional correction work supervising juveniles placed on probation or in detention by the courts. The role involves assessing probationers, ensuring adherence to probation terms, maintaining records, and providing limited counseling while coordinating with law enforcement and court personnel.

Responsibilities
  • Supervises juveniles placed on probation or in detention by the courts.
  • Assesses juvenile probationers, meets with them to ensure adherence to probation terms, and records all activities.
  • Provides limited counseling and refers clients to probation assistance programs.
  • Confers with law enforcement and court personnel regarding probation violations.
  • Develops supervision and treatment plans, supervises detention facilities, and transports juveniles between jails, medical institutions, schools, etc.
  • Maintains individual case files, records contacts, and prepares reports.
  • Utilizes computerized data entry equipment and word‑processing/file‑maintenance programs.
  • Testifies in court regarding probationers’ status and adherence to terms.
  • Calls detainees’ family members when necessary and advises detainees of rules and regulations.
  • Observes detainees’ demeanor to assess mental state and treatment needs.
  • Ensures regular and punctual attendance.
  • Documents all contacts with juveniles and other involved parties.
  • Answers phone calls, check‑ins, and e‑mails; prepares correspondence as needed.
  • Prepares Case Plans or Case Plan Reviews and associated documentation.
  • Attends court, checks paperwork, and enters adjudication information into the computer.
  • Completes sex offender risk assessments for offenders scheduled for hearings.
  • Sends copies of sex offender registration and related orders to the appropriate law enforcement agency.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience in a social service, community, corrections, or juvenile agency dealing with offenders or disadvantaged persons; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree and one year of graduate study in criminology, corrections, counseling, law, social work, psychology, sociology, or another field approved by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
  • Eligibility to obtain certification within six (6) months as a Juvenile Probation Officer by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to obtain a State of Texas driver’s license within 90 days.
  • Must meet requirements in Title 37, Chapters 343 & 344 of the Texas Administrative Code, including good moral character and being at least 21 years of age.
  • Must pass a State Criminal History background check.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred, but not required.
