Performs advanced and specialized drafting, calculations and design work; performs field work; uses automated systems; learns specialized techniques; trains and reviews the work of others. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
ADay in the life of a Drafter II may include:
- Drafting designs
- Preparing quantity calculations
- Field investigation
- Plan review
- Meeting with subject matter experts on plans and designs
- Other duties as assigned
- In addition, this level would be able to be completely self-directed in completion of design work prior to engineering approval
- Ability to train less experienced employees
- Drafting complex and advanced designs
Education
High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Drafter II:Experience
: 7 years drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Drafter III:Experience
: 8 years drafting, design, plan preparation. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Licenses and CertificationsValid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
CompetenciesDrafter II:
- Applicable computer software applications and hardware
- Advanced and specialized design/drafting procedures
- Plan review methods, processes and procedures
- Computer-aided drafting and design systems
- Reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints and maps
Additional Competencies for a Drafter III:
- Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities
- Design and plan preparation methods and requirements
- Higher mathematics
- Applying engineering principles, practices, and methods in job responsibilities
- Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
Working Conditions:
- Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
- Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
- Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
