Department SummaryAdvising Services at the University of North Texas provides proactive, holistic academic advising and student success support for exploratory, transitioning, and prospective students. The department advances student achievement through innovative initiatives in proactive advising and data‑informed practices, while fostering advisor excellence through professional development and advisor training.
Position OverviewThis position supports student success through proactive, student‑centered advising strategies. The role is responsible for counseling students by assessing their interests, aptitudes, and academic progress to guide major selection, degree planning, and career alignment. It also connects students with campus resources to support academic persistence, personal development, and timely graduation.
In addition to direct student advising, the position may serve as a subject matter expert or escalation point for complex cases. This position also assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of innovative advising initiatives and student success programs that align with institutional goals and address evolving student needs. This includes creating and delivering presentations, coordinating retention‑focused initiatives, and equipping staff with tools and training that support student achievement and career readiness.
Minimum QualificationsMaster's degree and four years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.
Knowledge,Skills And Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
- Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory.
- Strong presentation skills.
- Strong problem solving skills.
- Strong critical thinking skills.
- Strong counseling skills including exploratory academic counseling, career development, and group facilitation.
- Ability to communicate effectively with various populations verbally and in writing.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to work independently.
- Remains active in professional development.
Master's degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or related field.
Experience in an advising office counseling students who present with uncertainty of major, advising transfer students, and/or working with at‑risk populations.
