Lead Automotive Mechanic
Job SummaryPerforms skilled work diagnosing, maintaining and repairing a wide variety of vehicles and equipment. Provides training, administrative duties, fleet inspections, and safe vehicle operation. Works under minimal supervision with performance evaluated based on assignment completion.
Organizational RelationshipsReports to: Supervisor, Fleet Automotive Services
Supervises: No supervisory responsibilities but may oversee projects and provide training to staff with less experience.
- Diagnose and repair vehicle components using hand tools, pneumatic and electric equipment.
- Disassemble units and inspect parts for wear.
- Rebuild, replace or repair major vehicle components and assemblies.
- Align brakes, replace shock absorbers, and wire ignition systems.
- Maintain inventory, perform routine inspections, fueling and lubrication.
- Operate university buses, trucks, vans and cars as required for assigned tasks.
- Perform safety training for the University Authorized Driving Program.
- Check and maintain all fluid levels, schedule preventive maintenance, and observe safety rules.
- Assist with vehicle record maintenance, electrical testing, and installing accessories.
- Maintain a clean shop/work area.
- Assist with vehicle and driver scheduling, confirmation, and client communications.
- Secure bids for specialized shop work such as body repair, painting and upholstering.
- Perform other duties as requested.
High school diploma or equivalent required. Job‑related vocational or technical training preferred.
ExperienceFive years automotive mechanic experience. Supervisory experience a plus. State Inspector and/or CFC (Refrigerant) certification preferred.
Requirements- Must possess a CDL B license and attain a CDL A permit with Passenger (P) and Air Brake endorsements within one month; license within six months.
- Must attain State Inspector and CFC certification within six months.
- Valid Texas driver’s license and safe driving record.
- Pass all required DOT pre‑employment, random, reasonable suspicion, post‑accident drug and alcohol screens.
- Regular and reliable attendance.
- Diagnose vehicle and equipment problems using computerized and mechanical tools.
- Operate emergency equipment and exit passages.
- Advanced knowledge of diesel and fuel engine maintenance.
- Interpret electrical schematics and trace wiring issues.
- Operate controls of fleet vehicles.
- Read and perform written and mathematical functions.
- Manage software for automotive maintenance and parts inventory.
- Prioritize and schedule work for shop staff.
- Provide instruction to less skilled staff.
May be required to travel. Must occasionally lift or move up to 50+ pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities.
Work EnvironmentAuto shop environment, indoors and outdoors. Noise moderate to loud. May involve cold, heat, temperature swings, dust, fumes, chemical hazards, confined spaces. Protective equipment required per OSHA regulations.
SafetyEmployees and supervisors must report unsafe conditions, near‑miss incidents and submit injury reports within 24 hours.
