JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION: MEDICAL/SURGICAL CHARGE RN - DAY AND NIGHT SHIFT
12 HOUR SHIFTS
IMMEDIATE SUPERIORS: Chief Nursing Officer
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Indirect supervision by the House Supervisor and Nurse Manager
IMMEDIATE SUBORDINATES: RN, LPN, PCT, Unit Clerk
POSITION AUTHORITY: Discretion to proceed in accordance with organizational goals and policies established by the Tombigbee Healthcare Authority and Whitfield Regional Hospital Board of Directors.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with a current Alabama Nursing License as a Registered Nurse. Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
- Responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and controlling nursing activities during assigned shift to ensure optimal patient care.
- Ability to assess social and environmental needs of patients across pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations, and collaborate with healthcare team members.
- Capable of planning, implementing, and communicating clinical and management responsibilities effectively.
- Demonstrates leadership and maintains high performance standards as a role model.
- Handles emergency and stressful situations objectively and strategically without panic.
- Maintains professionalism and a positive outlook at all times.
- Ensures current competency through performance of job description criteria and ongoing education.
- Analyzes clinical trends, identifies staff and equipment needs within budget constraints.
- Coordinates educational needs assessment, provides in-services, and documents staff training.
- Participates in budget planning and monitors expenditures for compliance and efficiency.
- Documents patient conditions and responses accurately and concisely.
- Contributes to organizational mission by providing cost-effective, quality care and supporting financial goals.
- Collaborates on quality monitoring and evaluation activities, including scope of care, indicators, thresholds, data collection, and action implementation.
- Communicates findings and actions to relevant committees and personnel.
- Assists with fall prevention, medication safety, and patient satisfaction initiatives.
- Supports staff orientation, policy communication, and shift assignments.
- Functions as House Supervisor as needed and maintains unit updates.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Current Alabama RN license.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum one year of Medical Surgical Nursing; managerial experience preferred but not required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to lift at least 50 pounds.
- Normal or corrected hearing and vision.
- Physical stamina for rapid, efficient work including stooping, kneeling, reaching, and standing for prolonged periods.
- Fine motor skills for handling supplies and equipment.
- Ability to safely handle exposure to temperature conditions, irritants, and sharps.
