Summary

Under the direction of the Road Department Director, Road Supervisor or designee performs a variety of routine and complex mechanical tasks in support of the Public Works Department and the maintenance of heavy equipment used for transportation and construction of various County roads. This is a safety-sensitive position requiring the operation of various construction/maintenance equipment, applied mechanical skills, and having related experience in maintaining both diesel and gasoline engines and associated equipment.

Completes or assists in completing work orders and other maintenance documentation, inspection of tools and equipment assuring that all equipment and tools are kept in good working order. Inspects work assuring adherence to high quality standards.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Diagnoses and makes repairs to light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment. Diagnosing and repairing of mechanical problems, which can include engine, transmission, electrical, and suspension issues. Inspect vehicle engine and mechanical/electrical components for vehicle functionality and longevity.
  • Incumbent performs preventative maintenance, repairs, and diagnostics of light, medium, and heavy-duty gas and diesel-powered equipment. Also, performs mechanical repairs to hydraulic and electrical systems. Creates work orders, maintains a file system, and closes out tickets.
  • Performing regular maintenance on fleet vehicles, including oil changes, tire rotation, and inspections. Repair or replace broken or dysfunctional parts and fix issues. Conduct test drives to gauge the performance of the vehicles.
  • Knowledge of computers and computer based diagnostic tools and equipment to identify problems. Staying up-to-date with the latest automotive technologies and best practices.
  • Keeping detailed records of all repairs and maintenance performed. Keep logs on work and issues ensuring all vehicles meet safety standards and regulations. Keeping workshop clean, safe, and organized.
  • Working closely with fleet manager to coordinate scheduled maintenance and repairs.
  • Inspect tools and equipment for condition and assures that all are kept in good working order, and that all work assures adherence to high standards of quality.
  • Assisting in the acquisition of parts and equipment necessary for repairs and maintenance. Providing recommendations for major repairs or vehicle replacements for purchase orders when necessary.
  • Work safely at all times, adhering to OSHA, MSHA, and Road Department policies. Read and follow daily job hazard analyses with on-site personnel, ensuring the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), traffic control, and work zone safety requirements. Comply with safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain work-related records and logs, and manage personal protective equipment (PPE). Maintain radio communication with the supervisor to receive instructions or report issues. Demonstrate the ability to read, understand, interpret, and apply codes and ordinances related to environmental health.
  • Interact with the public to ensure compliance with regulations and foster effective relationships. Collaborate with team to meet fleet objectives.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others. Ability to follow established procedures and practices.
  • Perform additional routine maintenance activities as assigned.
Minimum Qualification Standards
  • Required High School Diploma or GED certificate.
  • Valid New Mexico Driver's License.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • 1-2 years of work experience in a repair shop or maintenance facility. Certification from a vocational school (e.g ASE) or completion of an apprenticeship is preferred. Educational experience in automotive service repair may substitute for required experience.
