Summary:
Under the direction of the Captain, Deputy Warden, and Warden, this position performs supervisory and operational duties related to the security, safety, care, and custody of detainees housed in the Detention Center. The Detention Lieutenant supervises staff, ensures compliance with policies and procedures, and may be assigned additional duties consistent with the role.
The Transport Lieutenant is also responsible for the supervision of Court Security and assigned staff. Court Security staff are responsible for securing and controlling access to the District Court Building and providing courtroom security during court sessions. The Transport Lieutenant coordinates with the Records Department to arrange transportation of detainees to and from other detention facilities and other court-ordered destinations.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:- Learns, understands, and facilitates duties under Direct Supervision protocols.
- Supervises detention personnel on assigned shifts, ensuring adequate staffing, approving timesheets and leave requests.
- Maintains the security and safety of the facility, including supervision of staff, detainee movement, transportation, meals, work details, head counts, and cell searches.
- Oversees and evaluates staff performance; provides training, conducts briefings, addresses operational issues, and recommends disciplinary actions when appropriate.
- Supervises assigned Detention Sergeants, Corporals, Officers, and Court Security staff; motivates, trains, evaluates, and works with staff to correct deficiencies.
- Administers first aid when necessary and refers detainees to medical staff as appropriate.
- Processes detainee requests and grievances.
- Reviews detainee admittances, releases, and incident reports for accuracy and completeness.
- Conducts investigations related to detainee rule violations and staff misconduct and submits findings and recommendations to the Warden.
- Completes required reports and performs other duties as assigned.
- Monitors and patrols designated areas of the facility, documents unusual conditions, and performs detainee counts in accordance with policy.
- Facilitates specialty teams and conducts in-service training as assigned by the Warden.
- May be assigned a 12-hour shift schedule based on operational needs.
- Oversees Court Security staff and protects persons and property associated with District Court operations.
Works under the direction of the Captain, Deputy Warden, and Warden.
Supervisory Responsibilities:Supervises Detention Sergeants, Detention Corporals, Detention Officers, Courthouse Security staff, civilian staff, and volunteers.
Minimum Qualifications:Applicants must submit a letter of interest detailing their qualifications for the position.
Education and Experience:- High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of full-time experience as a Detention Supervisor; or
- Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years of full-time experience as a Detention Officer in a detention or correctional facility.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and with diverse populations.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Must successfully complete a drug screen, physical examination, written examination, oral review board, and background investigation.
- Must qualify and maintain qualification with department-issued firearms in accordance with agency policy.
- Must possess or obtain within one (1) year of hire, a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger endorsement.

Knowledge:Detention operations and standards; applicable laws, regulations, and procedures; offender management systems (NCIC, AFIS); coordination with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies; supervisory and training practices; investigative procedures; and use of computer systems for data entry, reporting, and analysis.
