Q US (formerly Avantus Federal) invites you to join their world‑class team dedicated to next‑generation technology and products in robotic and autonomous platforms, including ground, soldier, and maritime systems. This role supports the DHS Customs & Border Protection Tethered Aerostat Radar System (TARS) program, providing persistent surveillance across eight operational sites along the U.S. Southern border and in Puerto Rico, Florida, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.
Position Overview
- The successful candidate will manage aerostat flight operations and perform comprehensive mechanical maintenance on aerostat and radar systems.
- Responsibilities include pre‑launch, launch, ascent, station keeping, and recovery operations, with emphasis on telemetry and control tasks.
- Secondary duties cover security, landscaping, and logistical support for site operations.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a senior machinery maintenance mechanic for all assigned aerostat shifts and site requirements.
- Perform a wide range of technical tasks, including using mechanical hand tools, disassembly/assembly, wiring, soldering, fiber‑optic splicing, and operating standard and unique test equipment.
- Handle aerostat fabric and high‑pressure gases such as helium and nitrogen.
- Execute flight crew duties: pre/post flight checks, launch/recovery, helium topping, snubbing, inflations/deflations, tether inspections, and emergency procedures for both moored and airborne operations.
- Record and enter significant events and data into the mission flight log.
- Conduct all aerostat electronic subsystem preflight and post‑flight inspections.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair aerostat structures, hydraulic systems, fiber‑optic components, avionics, electrical components, ground systems (generators, communications, weather), and monitor system performance.
- Perform corrective and preventive maintenance on telemetry, control, power, tether, meteorological, ground station, payload, and communications subsystems, as well as site facility equipment.
- Apply advanced technical knowledge to resolve complex problems beyond standard manufacturer documentation.
- Operate general‑purpose and special‑purpose vehicles, including man lifts up to 150 feet.
- Carry out additional duties as assigned.
Secondary Duties
- Maintain and understand site documentation (parts request forms, equipment condition tags, timecards, flight data, and maintenance logs).
- Calibrate all site and test equipment as required.
- Coordinate resupply and repair logistics for aerostat subsystems.
- Train and certify other personnel in selected aerostat subsystem procedures.
- Support security, logistics, and site‑specific requirements when not conflicting with primary responsibilities.
Required Qualifications
- GED or high school diploma.
- Seven years of mechanical maintenance experience (an associate or bachelor’s degree in any technical discipline may substitute for years’ experience).
- Ability to obtain flight operator certification.
- Valid U.S. driver’s license.
- Strong written and communication skills.
- Willingness to work in a 24/7 shift schedule and be assigned to various shifts as needed.
- Proof of U.S. residency.
