Overview
Technical work in the operation and maintenance of a Water Treatment Plant. Work is performed under general supervision.
Salary & BenefitsThere are three levels of license in the Water Treatment Plant. Salary offer and bonus would be based on applicant's license and experience.
- Treatment Plant Operator C – Pay Grade B10 – Starting Salary: $28.83;
Bonus $3,000 - Treatment Plant Operator B – Pay Grade B12 – Starting Salary: $32.78;
Bonus $3,000 - Treatment Plant Operator A – Pay Grade B13 – Starting Salary: $34.44;
Bonus $5,000

EssentialJob Duties
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Operating water treatment plant equipment and facilities, supplying proper water quantity and quality, and maintaining proper pressures and flow volume for the city.
- Monitoring plant equipment through visual inspection for proper operating parameters and mechanical integrity; maintaining a plant log detailing specific information. Assists in the operation and monitoring of all plant processes including filters, softening clarifiers, thickeners, vacuum filters, nanofiltration systems, degassifiers, scrubbers, etc., and chemical delivery systems for chlorine, lime, polymer, phosphates, fluoride, ferric chloride, sulfuric acid, sodium hydroxide and ammonia.
- Obtains and records field and computer readings of flow, tank and silo levels. Ensures delivery of various chemicals to their appropriate tanks; monitors the transfer of chemicals; receives chemicals for laboratory analysis.
- Collects samples and assists with all laboratory tests and/or analyses including chlorine, ammonia, pH, fluoride, conductivity, color, turbidity, alkalinity and hardness; operates and adjusts pumps, agitators, computers, valves, and other equipment to maintain the highest degree of treatment under supervision.
- Complies with safety regulations and standard operating procedures; complies with all federal, state and county regulations for safe drinking water.
- Reads a variety of charts, meters and SOPs; maintains accurate log sheets. Performs general maintenance tasks to keep buildings, vehicles, equipment and tools in operable condition, including inspecting equipment, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning work areas, painting building surfaces, pipes and equipment, maintaining grounds, removing trash, replacing light bulbs, refilling paper supplies, and reporting faulty equipment or problem situations. Works around rotating equipment and various hazardous chemicals.
- Performs various skilled and manual tasks in support of plant operations, such as cleaning tanks, inspecting/draining containment areas, hosing clear well decks, servicing pump rooms, exercising/cleaning eyewash and showers, descaling treatment basins, wiping equipment and control panels, loading/unloading materials, lifting/moving heavy materials, painting surfaces.
- Utilizes a variety of mechanical tools; conducts periodic inventory counts of equipment, tools, chemicals and supplies.
- Follows safety procedures when handling caustics and acids; uses safety equipment as required; maintains MSDS logs.
- As directed by supervisor, assists in supervising water plant staff in the absence of senior staff; assigns work, monitors progress, inspects completed work and troubleshoots.
- Assists in supervising plant operations; monitors all water treatment and pump processes; tests water samples; directs preventive/corrective actions; reviews plant logs and testing devices to ensure proper functioning.
- Assists in developing procedures to adjust plant operations to meet normal and emergency variations in water demand; assists in establishing laboratory procedures for tests on water; reviews test reports for adequacy of purification.
