If hired for this position, you will be sponsored by the delray beach police department to attend the police academy. The posted minimum salary applies only while in the police academy (approximately 6 months). Upon graduation from the academy and being sworn in by the chief of police, the salary increases to $69,000 for those with a high school diploma / associate’s degree or $71,718.60 for those with a bachelor's degree.

the purpose of this description is to prepare the police officer in training to perform general law enforcement work to preserve public peace, to protect lives, property and rights of the public; to enforce statutory law and municipal ordinances; to deter crime; and to respond to calls for law enforcement assistance. Duties may vary according to specific assignment.

general duty police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Work is performed under the general supervision of a police sergeant.

essential job duties
  • patrol the city by car, on foot, motorcycle, or bicycle.
  • respond to calls for service from the public.
  • effect an arrest, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints; subdue resisting suspects with defensive tactics maneuvers and approved weapons in self-defense.
  • exercise independent judgment in determining when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, probable cause to search and arrest, and appropriate use of force.
  • pursue fleeing suspects and perform rescue operations; lift, run, carry, and drag heavy objects; climb and maneuver in challenging environments.
  • gather information in criminal investigations by interviewing victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants.
  • prepare investigative and other reports, including sketches, using proper grammar and symbols.
  • operate a law enforcement vehicle during day and night; drive in emergency situations and adverse conditions.
  • communicate effectively over law enforcement radio channels.
  • load, unload, aim and fire weapons; demonstrate proficiency and pass firearms qualification standards; use a firearm under stress when justified.
  • perform searches of people, vehicles, buildings and large outdoor areas; detain persons and stop suspicious vehicles and individuals.
  • conduct visual and audio surveillance for extended periods.
  • engage in patrol functions including rotating shifts and physical checks of building security.
  • effectively communicate with people, including juveniles, by giving information, mediating disputes, and advising of rights and processes.
  • demonstrate communication skills in court and other formal settings.
  • detect and collect evidence indicating criminal offenses and dangerous conditions.
  • endure verbal and mental stress when confronted with hostility.
  • perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters; direct traffic; administer emergency medical aid when needed.
  • process and transport prisoners using restraints.
  • operate gas mask in situations with chemical munitions.
  • extinguish small fires with a fire extinguisher and other means.
  • read and comprehend legal and non-legal documents; prepare citations, affidavits and warrants.
  • process arrested suspects including photography and fingerprint impressions.
  • when designated, train, care for, and use a k-9 dog in patrol and other assignments.
