Compensation: Correctional Officer: $44,680.90;
Corporal: $46,924.80
Job Description: Applicants must be willing to attend an 8-week live-in academy in Oklahoma City from Sunday 6:00 PM through Thursday 6:00 PM and return home on the weekends. After graduation, applicants will be eligible to receive a bonus incentive.

Post-Appointment Applicants will work at their selected facility with a Field Training Officer until the academy begins. Academy

- Provides security and supervision to inmates in a variety of situations and activities; maintains security of an assigned area or post.
- Provides security and supervision over inmate work crews; escorts inmates to work sites; inventories and controls all equipment, weapons, tools and keys.
- Patrols yards, grounds, cell houses, corridors, dormitories and work areas on an assigned shift; observes activities and movements of inmates; manages inmate conduct, work and discipline.
- Maintains order and discipline in programs and during meals and recreation periods; inspects living areas, facilities and work locations for unauthorized objects or materials; makes reports on incidents.
- Operates manually or electronically controlled security equipment maintaining controlled movement of inmates, staff and the public.
- Conducts inmate counts; performs searches of inmates and living quarters for contraband; enforces institutional rules and regulations.
- Prepares written documentation and reports concerning inmate behavior, status and movement.
- Participates on escape and apprehension teams; responds to riots and fires.
Education and Experience
Correctional Officer:
Requires minimum age of 20; possession of 30 semester hours from an accredited college or university, or a high school diploma/GED plus completion of a training course approved by the Department and certified by the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET) either prior to employment or within the first six months of employment. Successful completion of the GED is based on standards established by the Oklahoma Department of Education.
For the Corporal level, 12 months of experience in correctional or security work for a governmental or private corrections agency is required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
Knowledge of English usage, basic math, reporting writing, use and care of firearms, proper restraint methods and techniques, self-defense methods, discipline methods for inmates under restraint, and psychology of inmate behavior. Ability to evaluate situations, act quickly and effectively in emergencies, follow instructions, gather and organize facts, produce clear reports, communicate effectively, maintain working relationships, maintain firearms proficiency, and assess and manage conflicts within the inmate population.
Special RequirementsApplicants/employees must meet additional requirements including:
- Satisfactory completion of minimum testing or professional evaluation to determine fitness for the position; written evaluations submitted to the Department of Corrections.
- Pre-employment and annual physical examinations as required by the Department of Corrections guidelines.
- Valid driver’s license at time of appointment for required travel.
- Subject to drug testing.
- Willingness and ability to work any assigned shift or day of the week, and additional shifts as required.
- Designation as a peace officer may apply; required training and screening to meet basic police course or peace officer certification; training includes physical conditioning, self-defense, and OC spray; specific statutory references noted in policy.
