Position Overview
Drishti IAS is seeking a highly experienced and proactive VP
-Legal to lead the legal and compliance function across all branches and business verticals, including offline centres, online/EdTech platforms, digital content, media, and publishing units.
The ideal candidate must have strong experience in the education or EdTech sector, with deep knowledge of regulatory frameworks governing educational institutions, digital learning platforms, content rights, and operations involving physical centres.
This role requires strategic leadership, legal foresight, and the ability to build a robust compliance culture across the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
Legal Strategy & Advisory
Develop and lead the organisation's overall legal strategy, ensuring alignment with long-term business goals in the education and EdTech environment.
Advise senior leadership (Board, MD, CEO, Divisional Heads) on legal implications of major decisions, policies, and business expansion plans.
Compliance Management (Education + EdTech)
Ensure compliance with all regulations applicable to:
Coaching centres and educational institutions
EdTech platforms and digital learning services
Online content delivery, privacy laws (DPDP Act), and IT guidelines
Employment laws across multiple centres
Establish internal compliance frameworks, audits, SOPs, and risk-control processes.
Contract & Documentation Management
Draft, review, and negotiate all legal documents, including:
Vendor contracts
Faculty and employee agreements
Licensing agreements for content, IP, and digital media
Collaboration/MoU agreements
Real estate, rental, and centre operation contracts
Maintain a central repository of legal documents and ensure periodic review.
Intellectual Property (IPR) & Content Protection
Oversee IP strategy for:
Study material, video lectures, books, digital products
Branding, trademarks, copyrights
Handle issues related to piracy, content theft, unauthorised distribution, and plagiarism.
Coordinate with tech and legal enforcement agencies for digital content protection.
Litigation Management
Manage and monitor all legal cases, notices, disputes, and arbitration matters.
Coordinate with external legal counsel and ensure timely filings and responses.
Represent the organisation in legal proceedings when required.
Policy Formation
Formulate internal policies in line with organisational needs:
Data protection & privacy
HR policies and disciplinary frameworks
Anti-harassment and grievance redressal guidelines
Centre operations and student conduct policies
Ensure all branches and departments adhere to policy guidelines.
Risk Mitigation & Due Diligence
Conduct legal due diligence for new branches, acquisitions, partnerships, and vendor onboarding.
Identify legal risks and propose preventive action plans.
Regulatory & Government Liaison
Liaise with regulatory bodies, local authorities, and government departments related to:
Education-sector permissions
Labour compliance
Commercial and municipal regulations
Handle inspections, audits, and statutory reporting.
Team Leadership
Lead and mentor the legal & compliance team across the organisation.
Build a culture of legal discipline, documentation, and operational compliance across all departments.
Required Qualifications & Experience
Education
LLB/LLM from a reputed university.
Additional certifications in corporate law, IPR, or regulatory compliance preferred.
Experience
10–20 years of legal experience (for VP level), with at least 5–8 years in the Education/EdTech sector.
Strong Expertise In
Contract management
Regulatory compliance in education
Intellectual property rights
Tech platform and digital content compliance
Litigation handling
Key Skills
Deep understanding of laws related to Education/EdTech sector
Strong drafting, negotiation, and documentation skills
Ability to manage multi-location compliance
Excellent communication and stakeholder management
Strategic thinking with operational execution ability
High level of integrity, confidentiality, and judgement.
